Since their release in a five-year time span from 2008 through 2012, the Twilight Saga has been nothing short of popular. The Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson film series has brought in a staggering $3.3 billion at the box office and even today, its popularity has not waned. This is evidence by the fact that all five films comprise the top five on Netflix.
Pretty much since Stephenie Meyer’s first novel in the series, Twilight, was published, it was earmarked for a Hollywood treatment. Paramount Pictures MTV Films took on the task of bringing it to the screen though Meyer was reluctant from the start. When the first script was handed in, her reluctance was proven correct as the script was very different from her novel.
According to Meyer at the time, she felt that the script was so different from her novel that they could have filmed it, given the movie a different name, and no one would have known it was her Twilight. Thankfully the project lingered until Summit Entertainment swooped in and purchased the right to the novel.
When Erik Feig of Summit announced their slate of movies back in 2007, he guaranteed to Meyer and fans that their adaptation of Twilight would be as close as it could get. He lived up to his word.
The first order of business was to find a director and producers quickly tapped Catherine Hardwicke for the initial entry. Hardwicke then went to the set of Adventureland, where she gave the film’s star Kristen Stewart an informal audition, which not only captivated Hardwicke, but allowed Hardwicke to give her the role.
As for Robert Pattinson aka Edward Cullen, his path was a bit more difficult. Hardwicke did not choose him at first, that is until she saw Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattison’s chemistry when they finally read lines together. With both stars set, the Twilight Saga began its impressive five-year run.
Twilight tells the story of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), a teenager who moves to the small town of Forks, Washington, to live with her father Charlie, the town’s chief of police. At school, Bella becomes infatuated with Edward, a 108-year-old vampire. This first film focuses on their developing relationship and ultimately Edward Cullen and his family’s ability to keep Bella and hers safe from evil vampires.
Catherine Hardwicke passed on directing duties for the second film, handing the reins over to Chris Weitz. In this film, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Bella is trying to cope with the fact that Edward and his family have moved away from Forks. In his place, Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner from the first film) becomes a serious friend to Bella. Unfortunately, Jacob has also become a werewolf.
Jacob and his Native American Quileute tribe then need to protect Bella from Victoria, the ruthless vampire who has vowed to avenge the death of her lover James, who Edward killed. Things get even more complicated and dangerous for Bella when Edward arrives to promise he’ll change Bella to a vampire if she will promise to marry him.
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse finds a new director for the third time. David Slade takes over and this time we find Kristen Stewart’s Bella Swan about to graduate high school. We also find Jacob and Edward’s family calling a temporary truce so they can battle Victoria and her army of newborn evil vampires. Jacob also has feelings for Bella, but he is unable to convince her to leave Edward. When Edward finally properly proposes, Bella accepts.
The fourth and fifth films of the Saga, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, were filmed by the fourth director in the series, Bill Condon. The movie was based on the final novel in the series, but the Saga’s popularity allowed for producers to turn the final novel into a two-parter.
In The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, we find out that Bella and Edward get married and in the end, Bella gets pregnant. The struggle turns to Bella’s ability to keep the child, as complications arise from it being half-human and half-vampire.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 follows Kristen Stewart’s Bella Cullen, now married, a vampire, and a mother. She must learn how to use her new powers to protect herself as well as her half-human, half-vampire daughter, Renesmee. The movie also includes the final showdown with the Cullens, the Denali Clan, and Jacob’s Quileute Tribe as they battle The Volturi, a vampire clan from Tuscany, Italy.
When her run ended with the Twilight Saga, Kristen Stewart was the world’s highest-paid actress. The price of fame, though, sometimes can be costly. In Stewart’s case, the bigger they are, the more people want to see her fail.
Fans initially took to Stewart but as time went on and her career began to truly take off, fans began to take shots at Stewart. “She can’t act,” “she’s wooden,” “she has no personality,” Kristen Stewart was getting it from all sides.
She didn’t make it any easier for her fans when her personal life became front-page news. Her cheating on then-boyfriend Robert Pattinson started the tongues wagging and since that time, they have pretty much not let up.
Through it all, though, Stewart has remained steadfast in her career, trying to block out all the noise. She remains one of the more sought-after actresses and has turned her attention away from Twilight material and delved into more serious art with films such as Certain Women, Personal Shopper, Lizzie, and Seberg.
Don’t think that Kristen Stewart has completely left behind her playful side. She was recently seen in the Charlie’s Angels reboot, the thriller Underwater, and rom-com Happiest Season.
Up next for Kristen Stewart is a walk back to drama with the film Spencer, where she takes on the role of Princess Diana.
If you’re in the mood for vampires, werewolves, and romance, you can get it all with the Twilight Saga as all five films can be seen on Netflix.
