We are inching closer to seeing John Cena in all his Peacemaker glory, bringing that hilarious character back into the fold after he stole many a scene in last summer’s The Suicide Squad reboot. It didn’t take long for Cena and James Gunn to announce that they would be doing a standalone series around the character, exploring just how he got mixed up with the Amanda Waller team in the first place. By all early accounts, the series is going to hit on every level with the action and laughs dialed up to the max. And the latest Peacemaker Red Band trailer only offers up more proof that this character is one of the best DC has to offer right now.

The Peacemaker Red Band trailer dropped on New Years Day and doesn’t come close to pulling any punches with both the hilarious way John Cena’s titular character interacts with the world, but also in how just damn bloody it’s all going to get. There looks like a perfect mix of laughs and weapons with Cena getting onboarded into the Suicide Squad type of lifestyle with missions, partners, handlers, and other “heroes”. Check out this trailer and tell me you aren’t pumped for the series.

Starting things off with John Cena in a classroom of kids, describing what he does for a living while in full garb, silver helmet included is such a masterstroke. If there was any superhero who didn’t belong in front of a group of impressionable kids, it’s this one. And he lets on why pretty quickly. Telling inappropriate stories, mentioning even more inappropriate relationships, and then giving the hulking bicep flex to cap it off is just so in line with what to expect out of the character. And then from there, we see that this series is looking to have a pretty high body account.

John Cena as Peacemaker clearly likes the assignments he and his pet eagle, named Eagley for effect, have been handed. Given a green light to go about killing everything in sight in the name of freedom and liberty, Peacemaker and company don’t pull a single punch and the adrenaline, when the action kicks up, seems pretty high. Sure, it’s interwoven with his general cluelessness around nearly everything life which makes it such a fantastic juxtaposition. We had glimpses of this in The Suicide Squad, but now it’s all on display.

In terms of the group tasked with keeping him in control and in line, those are Amanda Waller’s underlings. Back is Steve Agee as John Economos and Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, both of whom were featured in the original movie. Joining them will be Chukwudi Iwuji as Clemson Murn and Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo. The latter clearly is eager to help in any capacity even if she’s in a bit over her head.

It won’t be long until we have John Cena gracing the screen as Peacemaker. The limited series is set to premiere on HBO Max on January 13th. James Gunn is back in the director’s chair and he wrote the series as well. By all accounts, this is going to be a major hit.
