Jennifer Lawrence is well known for her major roles in X-Men, The Hunger Games, and Silver Linings Playbook. While she hasn’t been seen as much lately, she has a brand new movie out on Netflix, and the film quickly shot up to the number one spot on the platform. Don’t Look Up stars Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, and Jonah Hill in a dark comedy about the end of the world. Here’s everything you need to know about the new hit taking off on the streaming platform.
Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio are at the center of the star-studded cast. They play two astronomers who discover a comet is headed straight for Earth. That’s the beginning of a lot of disaster movies, Armageddon being a popular example, but Don’t Look Up goes in an entirely different direction. The two astronomers set out to tell the world about the terrible disaster headed their way, and despite their best efforts, no one seems to care. They tell the president, they tell the media, and they shout at random people, but the end of the world is treated like a joke. In fact, the president (played by Meryl Streep) only shows any real interest in the comet when it’s discovered that it is made of materials worth a great deal of money.
The two astronomers are desperate to get their message out to the public, but can’t make anyone take them seriously. Jennifer Lawrence responds to the situation with a lot of anger. Leonardo DiCaprio is seen responding with fear, sometimes having panic attacks. Meryl Streep (who plays the president of the United States) and Jonah Hill (who plays her son) are seen laughing the situation off. Singer Ariana Grande makes an appearance and seems to find the situation something interesting to talk about. The cast also includes Cate Blanchett, Tyler Perry, Ron Perlman, Timothee Chalamet, and Kid Cudi.

Don’t Look Up was written and directed by Adam McKay. His previous work includes comedies like Anchorman, as well as dramas like Vice and The Big Short. He has said that part of what drew him to casting Jennifer Lawrence in her role as Kate Dibiasky was the beauty of her anger. During an interview, he said, “No one has more beautiful anger than Jen. When she unleashes, it is a sight to behold.” He wrote the role with her in mind, knowing that her character’s biggest struggle would be that she is unwilling to play the game necessary to get politicians and the media to really listen to her message.
Don’t Look Up required a budget of $75 million. Of that sum, a great deal is going to the movie’s two main stars. Jennifer Lawrence is reportedly taking home $25 million for this one with Leonardo DiCaprio bringing in $30 million. The film had a limited release in movie theaters, but is mainly a streaming release for Netflix audiences. So far, Rotten Tomatoes shows that audiences and critics are divided on this one. The Tomatometer (showing 202 ratings from critics) puts the movie at a rotten 56% score. However, audiences put the movie at a solid 77%. The Jennifer Lawrence movie is rated R and has a runtime of two hours and 18 minutes.
There were a few years where it seemed like Jennifer Lawrence did one interview after another. Her movies came out regularly and there was no telling what she’d do next. The past few years, she’s slowed down. During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the actress shared that this was on purpose. She said that she had a history of people-pleasing. If she kept working, no one could be mad at her. Then, when she was everywhere, it seemed to her that she could do nothing right. Eventually, she felt that she had no life outside of her work, so she took a break and went out to get one.
While the actress isn’t sharing any looks at her life on social media, Jennifer Lawrence has appeared to successfully go out and get a personal life. In recent years, she married Cooke Maroney. The pair are expecting a child.
