Superman fans were first introduced to Man of Steel eight years ago. The film kicked off the DC Extended Universe and Henry Cavill’s tenure as Superman. Since then, the actor has appeared as the popular hero in several movies but not in a direct sequel.

There have been numerous rumors about Man of Steel 2 being in the works. One story claimed J.J. Abrams was producing the film, while others stated that Henry Cavill was signing on to return. Interestingly, Man of Steel writer David S. Goyer thinks a sequel could still happen with Cavill as the Last Son of Krypton.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about his work in the realm of comic book movies and television shows, Goyer was asked about the rumors of Henry Cavill’s return as the Man of Steel. While he thinks there’s still hope, the writer told the publication that he’s not in a position to know more than the average fan.

“I think so. I’m not involved in it right now. I’ve heard the same rumors you’ve heard, but I’m not plugged into it. I’ve stepped away almost entirely from comic book-related projects other than Sandman, which I don’t really categorize as part of the normal DC universe.”

Although Man of Steel earned an impressive $668 million at the global box office, the movie still proved to be divisive. A lot of fans didn’t care for Zack Snyder’s darker take on Superman and criticized him for the film’s excessive levels of violence. So any plans the studio may have had for a sequel with Henry Cavill in the lead were shelved.

Then in 2018, fans were shocked when Henry Cavill exited the role. At the time, the reason for the split occurred when negotiations for a Superman cameo in Shazam! broke down due to scheduling conflicts. Naturally, news of the actor’s departure caused a stir among fans, with some seizing the opportunity to campaign for the actor to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe instead.

While Man of Steel 2 seems mostly hypothetical for now, there was a time when Henry Cavill was on board with the idea of doing a second movie. Speaking to Collider in 2018, the Witcher star said he would love to do a direct sequel to the film, because “there is a whole bunch of Superman story that I want to tell and I’m looking forward to the opportunity.”

Interestingly, Man of Steel director Zack Snyder has repeatedly talked about the possibility of more stories involving Henry Cavill’s Superman. The director told Brobible that he considered doing a Brainiac movie, focusing on cosmic enemies as opposed to mortal ones. And since the Kryptonians in the Phantom Zone are probably still around, there’s always a possibility for their return. Unfortunately, Warner Bros hasn’t officially announced Man of Steel 2. But if the popularity of Zack Snyder’s Justice League is anything to go by, there’s still hope.

Meanwhile, Henry Cavill has a few new projects in the works, including a Highlander reboot, Matthew Vaughn’s new spy franchise Argylle. He will also be reprising his role as Sherlock Holmes for the Enola Holmes sequel. And the second season of The Witcher will be on its way very soon.
