With Marvel’s Phase Four really ramping up in terms of movies and series, there has been all kinds of great casting news about old faces returning to original or even new roles. It’s a great time for the universe that’s set to take the franchise in a number of different directions. One of those pieces of casting has it that a Giant Freakin Robot exclusive has now been confirmed. According to the DisInsider podcast (via EpicStream), Hayley Atwell is returning to the MCU and will play Peggy Carter in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Now, Hayley Atwell returning as Peggy Carter doesn’t mean we are going to pick up with her story along the same timeline we last saw her at the end of Avengers: Endgame. That had her dancing with Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers after he reset that character’s original timeline and ended up spending the rest of his life with his one true love. No, this situation will be an altogether different thing.

With the Marvel Cinematic Universe now set to lean fully into the Multiverse following the events of Loki Season 1, we are about to embark into a world that features alternate iterations of some beloved characters. Some of this will be through the animated series What If…?, based on the popular comic book series that asks the titular question about what if things turned out differently in the Marvel Universe. In one episode, we will see Hayley Atwell voice Peggy Carter who is actually the one who became Captain America instead of Rogers.

The Giant Freakin Robot exclusive had it that Atwell will reprise her Carter role in the second Doctor Strange movie and she will stick as Captain America in the live-action feature. This is an awesome development, one of just the many things that will turn the MCU on its collective head. Such is the case with the Multiverse that imagines, and then reimagines all the different ways worlds could have turned out.

The Hayley Atwell version of this character is appropriately named Captain Carter and could become a mainstay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward. We already know, from the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier that a new Cap is in town with Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson taking the shield, but that there will be other versions of the character as well.

Quietly, Hayley Atwell has one of the longest-tenured runs in the Marvel Universe. She first appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger and went on to reprise the role in multiple movies over the years. And she’s also voiced the role along the way as well. But she also starred in ABC’s Agent Carter for two seasons which ran in conjunction with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on the network. Making an appearance, whatever the cameo ends up being, will now have Atlwell on-screen as Carter for over a decade. Few others can claim that kind of longevity. I’m sure we will continue to hear more news about Atwell’s roles going forward and just how crazy Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will make the MCU as a whole.
