Hayley Atwell will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the animated Disney+ series Marvel’s What If…? as the multiverse variant character Captain Carter. Many have assumed that this would just be a fun treat for fans that have missed her presence in the Marvel movies and television shows, but it turns out that it is going to be setting up a crucial part of the upcoming Doctor Strange 2 story.
Giant Freakin Robot has exclusively learned through one of our trusted and proven insider sources that Hayley Atwell will see her Captain Carter character make the transition from cartoon to live-action as she is set to appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. We were unable to confirm just how much screen time she will be getting, but we do know that her role will be an important one and that it will likely be set up in her Marvel’s What If…? episode.
And there is already proof that Hayley Atwell has a role to play in the upcoming story. In the trailer for Marvel’s What If…?, there is a moment where we see Captain Carter fighting against giant tentacles. These tentacles certainly look like they belong to Shuma-Gorath, one of the most frightening and strange villains in the Marvel universe of characters. It looks like this will give audiences their first taste of the multiversal being and will act as a way to introduce the villain in the lead-up to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This would seemingly confirm that Shuma-Gorath is the Big Bad of the sequel. You can see the shot from Marvel’s What If…? below with Hayley Atwell in animated form and what must be Shuma-Gorath. It has been modified for better clarity.
With the Marvel Cinematic Universe looking to finally commit to the multiverse, could this mean that Hayley Atwell would become a more permanent fixture in the main Marvel universe as Captain Carter? Obviously, the main timeline’s Peggy Carter has passed away but fans surely want more of the actress as she made the character incredibly indelible. Will she be popping up in Doctor Strange 2 only to be killed off early? Or could she end up putting down roots in the main Marvel timeline and fight alongside someone like Anthony Mackie’s new Captain America? Could she be a central figure in the upcoming Captain America 4? Whatever the plans for Hayley Atwell might be, it would be thrilling to have Captain Carter in the mix with this new phase of Marvel superheroes in Phase Four.
Hopefully, the appearance of Hayley Atwell in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is not just a minor cameo. Bringing her to life from the animated series and giving fans the hope of Hayley Atwell as a regular superhero character would be pretty painful if they took it away just as quickly. Hopefully, once we start seeing more from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, we can get a better picture of just what the movie has in store for this multiverse variant of the beloved character.
