What If...? Marvel

Marvel has some unknown dates for its upcoming series that are scheduled for the end of this year. One of those got knocked off the TBA list to the confirmed list with What If…? getting a brand new trailer and an August 11 release date.

Check out the What If…? trailer right here:

What If…? is based on a comic book run of the same name that gives fun what-if scenarios with iconic characters. The series will give fans everything from T’Challa not being Black Panther to then get abducted by Yondu to become Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill or Peggy Carter getting the serum with the shield to become Captain America instead of her lover Steve Rogers.

Marvel will bring back old favorites for one last go as their characters along with remaining people who will go on a one-off journey with their hero or villain without any consequences for what’s to come in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with What If…?.

Steering Marvel’s first animated series with What If…? will be showrunner and writer A.C. Bradley (3Below: Tales of Arcadia) and directed by Bryan Andrews (Jackie Chan Adventures). This makes for Bradley’s first time working for the superhero company, but far from the first for Andrews. While his directing credits list is short, he has worked within the art department on plenty of movies for the franchise to pinnacle conclusions like Avengers: Endgame to standalone like Ant-Man.

Some of the biggest stars in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are coming to reprise their roles in What If…?. Actors like Josh Brolin reprising Thanos, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury will all make an appearance.

Smaller, more obscure characters will have a role to play in What If…?. Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster from Thor: Ragnarok and Chris Sullivan’s Taserface from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will pop up in some capacity.

The one new face introduced into Marvel’s universe to host What If…? with Jeffery Wright (Westworld) as The Watcher. The narrator has deep connections to the comic books. Watchers are beings that have the power to achieve anything they desire, like manipulating space and time. This is Marvel we are talking about, so even a show like this will have an explanation.

The comic books of the What If…? anthology series date back to 1977, with scenarios like Spider-Man joining the Fantastic Four and the Avengers being established in the 50s. More focused iterations came in the past decade. 2013’s What If…?: Avengers vs. X-Men pit the two teams against one another and 2015’s miniseries What If…?: Infinity looked at different possibilities of Thanos’ attack on Earth are two examples of how far-reaching it became over the years.

Fans can check out What If…? on August 11 exclusively on Disney Plus. The 11 episode show will release episodes every Wednesday. After its finale, Marvel will have two more series to debut on the streaming service with Hawkeye and Ms. Marvel, which don’t have release dates or trailers as of now.
