Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone flew its way into theaters 20 years ago today, and the Wizarding World has enchanted fans who have read the books with its spellbinding movie magic. Since then, the Harry Potter franchise has spawned from the books its movies, theme park attractions at Universal Studios, and even Broadway shows. For all that success, Hogwarts alumni Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint are reuniting for a special Harry Potter project to celebrate the inaugural film’s 20th anniversary.

Daniel Radcliffe and his fellow wizards will reunite with director Chris Columbus and other cast members from the entire film series for a retrospective special titled Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, which will stream on HBO Max on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2022. As reported by Variety, the special will have exclusive in-depth interviews and conversations with the cast, “inviting fans on a magical first-person journey through one of the most beloved film franchises of all time.” All eight films are currently streaming on HBO Max. The special will also air on WarnerMedia’s TBS and Cartoon Network in spring 2022 ahead of the theatrical release of Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore.

Joining Daniel Radcliffe and the Hogwarts kids for the Harry Potter retrospective tribute are other alumni that include Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Isaacs, Gary Oldman, Imelda Stanton, Tom Felton, James Phelps, and Alfred Enoch, among many other actors. “It has been an incredible journey since the debut of the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone film, and witnessing how it has evolved into this remarkable interconnected universe has been magical, to say the least,” Tom Ascheim, President of Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics, said in a press release. “This retrospective is a tribute to everyone whose lives were touched by this cultural phenomenon — from the talented cast and crew who poured their heart and soul into this extraordinary film franchise to the passionate fans who continue to keep the Wizarding World spirit alive 20 years later.”

Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts will be produced by Warner Bros. Unscripted Television in association with Warner Horizon at the iconic Warner Bros. Studio Tour London — The Making of Harry Potter attraction, and it will be executive produced by Casey Patterson of Casey Patterson Entertainment and UK-based Pulse Films. “There’s magic in the air here with this incredible cast, as they all return home to the original sets of Hogwarts, where they began 20 years ago. The excitement is palpable as they prepare to take their fans on a very special and personal journey, through the making of these incredible films,” Patterson said.

Fans who don’t want to wait until New Years to catch Daniel Radcliffe reminiscing on his early days playing the boy who lived will get a chance to prepare for all the magical nostalgia-filled special with an exclusive first look at the documentary during the premiere of Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of Houses on TBS and Cartoon Network on November 28 at 8 p.m. EST. This bracket-style quiz show will be hosted by Helen Mirren and will feature fans going head to head for the Tournament of Houses championship trophy. The show will have cameo appearances by Harry Potter stars Tom Felton, Simon Fisher-Becker, Shirley Henderson, and Luke Youngblood, as well as superfans Jay Leno and Pete Davidson. The four-part competition will also stream on HBO Max the same day as the Harry Potter 20th anniversary special.
