Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Reveals Return Of Everyone’s Favorite Ghost

Ghostbusters: Afterlife was a nostalgic return to form for the Ghostbusters franchise, but fans did wonder where Slimer was in all of this. Well, fans can expect to see the sloppy green ghost again in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. The official X account for the film posted a theater display where the hungry green ghost can be seen flying alongside an Ectomobile, apparently joining a “new empire of spirits,” according to the post.

Slimer seems like he’ll be the least of the Ghostbusters worries, as Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire sees the Spengler family returning to New York City to the OG Ghostbusters firehouse

Afterlife director Jason Reitman previously explained that Silmer was absent from Ghostbusters: Afterlife since the film was set in Oklahoma. In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the new team will be teaming up with the old team as the franchise returns to New York City, where the green ghost calls home. Meaning, there definitely was no excuse to leave him out of this sequel.

It’s unclear how prominently Slimer will be featured in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, but the film already has a stacked cast that should make for a pretty good time.

Slimer first appeared in the original Ghostbusters in 1984 as a gluttonous, mischievous ghost who would consume anything in its past.

The cast includes Bill Murray, Finn Wolfhard, Ernie Hudson, Mckenna Grace, Paul Rudd, Celeste O’Connor, Logan Kim, Annie Potts, Dan Aykroyd, Carrie Coon, Patton Oswalt, Kumail Nanjiani, James Acaster, and Emily Alyn Lind. Gil Kenan (Monster House) is taking over directing duties from Jason Reitman, who is shifting to the producer role instead.

Slimer seems like he’ll be the least of the Ghostbusters worries, as Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire sees the Spengler family returning to New York City to the OG Ghostbusters firehouse, where they have developed a top-secret research lab. However, an ancient artifact unleashes a force known as the Death Chill. The two busting teams must team up to prevent the world from entering another Ice Age.

The appearance of Slimer in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire definitely shows that the creative team behind the film knows what the fans want. Slimer first appeared in the original Ghostbusters in 1984 as a gluttonous, mischievous ghost who would consume anything in its past. The character has since become a goofy, iconic mascot for the franchise, but his initial appearance in the Sedgewick Hotel was actually pretty spooky.

Slimer gained even more prominence after appearing in the animated series The Real Ghostbusters, where he became more of a pet and loyal companion to the Ghostbusters. Plus, every kid from the 80s and 90s will remember Hi-C Ecto Cooler, which featured the green ghost on the packaging. It’ll definitely be great to see the character make his glorious return to the big screen in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, whether he’s friend or foe.

Afterlife director Jason Reitman previously explained that Silmer was absent from Ghostbusters: Afterlife since the film was set in Oklahoma.

Jason Reitman revitalized the Ghostbusters franchise with the success of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, leading Sony Pictures to quickly greenlight a sequel in 2022. It remains to be seen if Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire can recreate the critical and commercial success of Afterlife, but having Slimer along for the ride is certainly a promising step in the right direction.

Fortunately, we don’t have to wait too much longer to check out the film, since Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is set to hit theaters on March 29, 2024.
