Jack Gleeson will play Wentworth in The Famous Five adaptation.
Jack Gleeson, known for his portrayal of King Joffrey Baratheon in Game of Thrones, is set to tackle the role of Wentworth in the forthcoming series adaptation of Enid Blyton’s The Famous Five books. A recent photo of Gleeson, shared by the BBC and highlighted by Comic Book, offers a glimpse into his eerie appearance in the show.
Although details about his latest role are scarce, it’s safe to say that Gleeson’s portrayal of Wentworth will be a distinct departure from his role as King Joffrey.
Jack Gleeson will play Wentworth in the adaptation of The Famous Five books
The photo features a nearly unrecognizable Jack Gleeson, who has shed his royal Game of Thrones garb for a suit and a creepy mustache to embody the character of Wentworth.
The Famous Five, set to exhibit a vastly lighter tone compared to the violence and explicit content of Game of Thrones, brings to screen the adaptation of beloved children’s adventure novels. The stories revolve around the adventures of a group of children, Julian, Dick, Anne, and George, and their dog, Timmy.
The principal cast of The Famous Five features Diana Babnicova as George, Elliott Rose as Julian, Kit Rakusen as Dick, and Flora Jacoby Richardson as Anne. Timmy, the group’s loyal canine companion, will be portrayed by Kip, a Bearded Collie Cross. Alongside Gleeson and the explorers are Ann Akinjirin as Fanny, James Lance as Quentin, and Diana Quick as Mrs. Wentworth.
Jack Gleeson had previously announced his retirement from acting after Game of Thrones
Jack Gleeson’s involvement in the upcoming series is an unexpected turn for his fans. The Irish actor had previously announced his retirement from acting after his character, Joffrey Baratheon, was killed off in Game of Thrones. He revealed in multiple interviews that his passion for the profession had waned, leading to his decision to step away from the industry.
After his stint in Game of Thrones, Gleeson did take a six-year hiatus from acting. However, he made a comeback by portraying the character Casper in two episodes of the TV series Out of Her Mind. The following year, in 2021, he stepped into the role of Rory in the comedy film Rebecca’s Boyfriend.
Filming for The Famous Five is currently underway in the UK. Although Game of Thrones is arguably Jack Gleeson’s most notable role to date, his part in The Famous Five carries significant potential, given the renowned status of Enid Blyton’s collection of books. Moreover, the upcoming television series has a wealth of source material to explore, with the ability to draw from a collection of 21 novels and short stories.
At present, no official release date has been announced for The Famous Five. It’s noteworthy that unlike numerous other film and television productions, which have been forced to halt operations due to the ongoing strikes by the Writers Guild of America (WAG) and the Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), The Famous Five seems to be unaffected by these disruptions.
This unusual situation could be attributed to the fact that several of the show’s actors hail from the U.K. and are contracted under a local union known as Equity, which is not a part of SAG-AFTRA, thereby allowing the production to continue unhindered.
