Frank Grillo feels Marvel shortchanged his role as Crossbones.

James Gunn and Peter Safran are making room in their new DC Universe for actor Frank Grillo after he reveals he is leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe, reports Screen Rant. The actor had a small role in MCU films as the HYDRA operative villain, Crossbones, but his character was killed before his role could expand to its full potential.

Frank Grillo’s character Crossbones first appeared in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and was then killed off in Captain America: Civil War. Frank Grillo is disappointed that his small role was eliminated when it could have been expanded, leaving him disappointed in Marvel as a company. He has since made the choice to switch teams from Marvel to DC.

There is currently no confirmation on which DC Universe movie Frank Grillo will appear in, but some fans are speculating he will be in the new Creature Commandos animated series. As the first of 10 projects for the new DC Studios, the series will have a similar plot to Suicide Squad, with a rag-tag group of creatures coming together to fight enemies.

Being cast in an action film is nothing new for Frank Grillo, who has appeared in films like The Grey, Warrior, and The Purge: Anarchy alongside big names like Liam Neeson and Tom Hardy. The actor has since taken on more leading roles like those in his upcoming films Black Lotus and Hounds of War. Frank Grillo’s background as a martial artist has surely inspired his action-packed career that currently spans 90 projects, with nine more on the way.

Frank Grillo is now joining the ranks of many other cast and crew members who have decided to jump ship from Marvel to DC, or vice versa.

Ben Affleck went from his role in Marvel’s 2003 Daredevil film to his expanded role as Batman in the DC films Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Justice League. And even though he would like us all to forget about it, Ryan Reynolds first appeared as the Green Lantern in the DC Universe before switching to Marvel for his perfectly fitting role as Wade Wilson in Deadpool.

Most recently, James Gunn, director of the Guardians of the Galaxy films, made the jump over to the DC Universe. As the new Co-chairman and Co-CEO of DC Studios, he will have lots of freedom and creative liberty to produce the films he has always dreamed of, along with Peter Safran. James Gunn’s final Marvel film, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3, will premiere in theaters on May 5, 2023.

While we all wait anxiously for the new DC Universe films and how Frank Grillo will contribute, we know we can look forward to Superman Legacy, which will premiere in just two short years on July 11, 2025.
