Classic and popular stories will be around in the public consciousness forever it seems and that’s why we often get retellings or updated versions on the big screen every so often. It’s just the nature of the business with what is old often becoming new again. One story that’s been rumored for an adaptation for some time now with limited word on movement might have just gotten a big update. According to the latest Giant Freakin Robot exclusive from our trusted and proven source, there’s renewed interest in getting the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde movie back off the ground with Joaquin Phoenix and Zoe Kravitz eyed for the lead roles.
This Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde production has been floating around Hollywood for a bit now with Joaquin Phoenix originally thought to be attached in the lead. But that buzz had died down, until now. It looks like things are picking up on the studio front and there’s a renewed belief that Phoenix is the main target to play the lead role in the movie. Universal has the rights here and has been the studio rumored to be in production on the story. Though other folks have circled the adaptation before, they look to be driving this current one.
Additionally, another reason to suspect that Joaquin Phoenix could be circling the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde leading role is that it appears the studio is also circling Todd Phillips to take on directing duties for the film. From a pairing standpoint, these two working together is something of a no-brainer. After all, the two previous put together Joker which was a psychologically thrilling masterpiece about one man’s descent into madness, becoming the Clown Prince of Crime. It was a totally new look at the character than what we’ve seen on the big screen before and a massive surprise at the box office where it did more than $1 billion in ticket sales before it was all said and done. There have been rumors of a sequel, though nothing is confirmed on that end.
As for Zoe Kravitz, the actress is being eyed for a lead role in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as well, though it’s not totally clear who she would be playing alongside Joaquin Phoenix. This character has been taken in different directions in the past. The original story does not have a strong female character in it, though an updated version could easily take things in a slightly different direction. It wouldn’t be all that heavy a lift to transform the tale into something of a moral dilemma around a relationship rather than just a simple alter-ego, a good vs evil thing that happened in the original Robert Louis Stevenson version.
Time will indeed tell with what happens here around a possible Joaquin Phoenix-led adaptation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. If they are able to bring on Zoe Kravitz and Todd Phillips as well then we could have a total winner for a story that hasn’t seen a solid adaption in many years.
