Fans of comic book movies have a lot to look forward to. As HBO Max has proven to be a successful venture for WarnerMedia, they’ve taken the opportunity to add a whole list of DC projects to their slate as streaming exclusive movies for the DC Extended Universe. One of the most notable is Batgirl, a movie that sees Leslie Grace taking on the titular role and being joined by Michael Keaton’s Batman, JK Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, and Brendan Fraser for the first time as DC’s iconic comic villain, Firefly. This is a big moment for Fraser, who is in the middle of a welcomed comeback in Hollywood. Now, we’re hearing there’s another reason for his fans to celebrate. A trusted and proven inside source for Giant Freakin Robot has learned that a Brendan Fraser spin-off project for Firefly is in development.

This is big news for both DC and Brendan Fraser. It definitely hints that Firefly will have a major and interesting role in Batgirl, which is well underway with filming in Glasgow, Scotland right now. Only the barest glimpses have been caught of him behind the scenes, and none of them in costume as the DC villain, so fans haven’t gotten to know much about how he’ll be portrayed yet. Audiences have previously seen the character in the comics and video games.

Since Batgirl is going to be streaming exclusively on HBO Max, we would assume that the Firefly spin-off movie for Brendan Fraser will do the same. However, that’s only a guess. We weren’t able to confirm that. It’ll be interesting to see if more characters from Batgirl or other DC movies join him. Will Michael Keaton’s Batman show up in the spin-off? Will Commissioner Gordon? There have been early hints of Jurnee Smollet’s Black Canary being set up in Batgirl, could she be in the Firefly spin-off?

While another DC project is one great reason to get excited about this, and Brendan Fraser’s big comeback is another, there’s also the fact that this is another story from the perspective of a villain. Those have proven to be a hit with fans, especially with Joker. Since Brendan Fraser is going to star in the project, it seems less likely that it will be an origin story for Firefly that goes back in time. This hopefully means that the Firefly spin-off will take place after the events in Batgirl, though that’s only speculation. It would be great if this means that the new DC projects coming are going to help build momentum for the overall story of DC’s cinematic universe.

It wasn’t all that long ago that Batgirl was announced. They’re currently filming. While the studio hasn’t officially announced a firm release date, the movie is expected to release in 2022. It looks like streaming can mean a much faster production schedule for DC’s project. We don’t know when they’ll start production on the Brendan Fraser spin-off, but Batgirl’s timeline does speak well to a release date in 2024, or possibly even late 2023 if audiences are lucky enough.
