Will Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise ever take up their roles again for an Edge of Tomorrow sequel? Emily Blunt said in a recent interview the new script is “really promising”. She doesn’t want anyone to get too excited about a timeline, though. Between the schedules of Blunt, Tom Cruise, and the director, Doug Liman, it may be a long wait for something more to happen.

Do you feel as though you’ve been hearing promises for a possible sequel for years? If you feel like you’re in one of those Groundhog Day time loops used in the original Edge of Tomorrow film, you’re not alone. Doug Liman, who directed Edge of Tomorrow, Tom Cruise, and Emily Blunt have been discussing the idea of a sequel pretty much since the 2014 movie was released. Despite the lackluster success at the box office, the movie was received well by critics and the team has continued to express interest in a sequel.

Emily Blunt was asked for an update in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Here’s what she had to say…

“Yes, [the script] is really promising and really, really cool,” said Blunt. “I just don’t know when everything’s going to sort of align, you know what I mean? Between all of our schedules, it would just have to be the right time. But there is something in the works, for sure, that’s a great idea. A great idea.”

She isn’t kidding about the busy schedules of those involved. The latest news for Emily Blunt is that she is in talks with Marvel to star in a Fantastic Four movie. Tom Cruise and Doug Liman are teaming up with Elon Musk and NASA to hopefully film a movie actually in outer space. This would happen somewhere between all the other projects they’ve already committed to.

Even with their busy schedules, director Doug Liman continues to push the sequel. He posted a photo of the whiteboards where they were working on the script at one point, hinting that it took up a lot of space. The original movie used the Groundhog Day trope where the characters looped through the same day again and again. The complicated whiteboards hint that Edge of Tomorrow 2 may also have a looping storyline. There’s no telling how many times Emily Blunt’s character will meet her end this go around.

What else do we know about the sequel? At this point, we know that the script is titled Live Die Repeat And Repeating. We know that the first film had a satisfying conclusion to the story. This may make it less of a surprise that Edge of Tomorrow 2 is actually a “sequel that’s a prequel”. Generally, prequels are not with fan enthusiasm. Though, it does make sense in a story world that’s already established time travel and had a satisfying conclusion.

Another factor to eventually making this movie will be the large gap between production schedules, which means the actors are aging. In a prequel, will they need to look younger? Emily Blunt previously joked, “Tom and I are going to be 70 before we make another one. It’s going to look a bit weird. We’ll have to do a real flashforward one.”
