ANDOR

Ahead of Disney+’s huge new series Obi-Wan Kenobi premiere, the purveyors of all things Star Wars have dropped some big news about another one of its upcoming shows. Deadline reports that Andor is set to make its bow on the popular streaming platform in the late summer. The Diego Luna starring Rogue One prequel will premiere with two episodes on August 31.

The news was announced at this year’s Star Wars Celebration at Anaheim and Star Wars even shared a teaser trailer for the hotly anticipated series on their Twitter page. The teaser shows Diego Luna reprising his role as Cassian Andor in the days before Rogue One, living under the immense threat that is the Galactic Empire, who in this story are at the height of their power. The teaser offers glimpses of some of Diego Luna’s high-profile co-stars, such as Killing Eve’s Fiona Shaw and Dune: Part One’s Stellan Skarsgård.

Just like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor is opening its account with a double bill. Andor‘s subsequent ten episodes will roll out in a weekly fashion and if a dozen new episodes aren’t enough, showrunner Tony Gilroy has confirmed that Andor will shoot for a dozen more episodes in November, in what is set to be a second series/part two of the Andor story. It would appear that Diego Luna and co have earned the envy of Ewan McGregor, who has recently stated he’d be open to continuing his story beyond the limited series run of six episodes that is Obi-Wan Kenobi.

It is clear that Disney and LucasFilm have a lot of faith in Andor and the show’s ability to wow audiences. The show’s dozen episode length makes it the longest live-action single Star Wars season to date and the fact that this is just one half of a story with further episodes to be shot is quite bold considering the central character originated in a spin-off Star Wars movie. That being said, Rogue One had a lot to offer fans and certainly stands out amongst Disney’s galactic cinema offerings. Not only that, but Diego Luna’s Rebel spy from the off appeared as a character with a rich backstory, so it should really come as no surprise that Disney wants to tap into this extensively. Andor will see Diego Luna’s titular hero go up against the might of the Empire, beginning with the destruction of his homeworld. According to The Verge, the official description says that the series will cover Andor’s journey to becoming a true leader within the Rebel Alliance.

This announcement shows that the summer of 2022 is set to spoil Star Wars fans with both Obi-Wan Kenobi and Diego Luna’s Andor. These two shows aren’t the only ones to look forward to on Disney+ either. Rosario Dawson is set to get her own Ashoka series and the one who started it all, Pedro Pascal, will be returning for The Mandolorian Season Three. It is easier than ever to explore the stories of a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.
