Clancy Brown Joining The Boys Spinoff In Mysterious Role?

Clancy Brown is rumored to be appearing in The Boys: Gen V.

Beloved character Clancy Brown is joining The Boys: Gen V, according to One Take News. While neither Clancy Brown nor Amazon Prime Video has publicly commented on the star of The Bride being cast in the upcoming Boys spin-off, this is very exciting news for fans of both the darkly comedic superhero franchise and Brown’s impressive career. Reportedly, Clancy Brown will appear in at least one episode of the series, and likely more.

If Clancy Brown has indeed been cast in The Boys: Gen V, it hopefully will be for a role that suits his unique combination of physical menace, baritone gravitas, and occasional goofiness. In many ways, Clancy Brown is perfect for The Boys franchise as a whole, being able to play over-the-top villainous characters and surprisingly sympathetic figures with equal ease. Given that The Boys has generally gone equally hard on shockingly graphic violence, gallows humor, and heartfelt human moments, the actor will be right at home.

However, since Clancy Brown has allegedly been cast in a spin-off rather than The Boys proper, it is sadly unlikely that we will see him interacting with Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) or the Homelander (Antony Starr) anytime soon. The Boys: Gen V is focused on a younger generation of supes undergoing a series of tests of skill and power at Godolkin University School of Crimefighting at the behest of the nefarious Vought International company. Essentially, the show is about a bunch of superpowered collegiate-age teens trying to make it to the big time in a Hunger Games-style scenario.

The Boys: Gen V is loosely inspired by a storyline titled “We Gotta Go Now” (itself a reference to the classic anarchic college comedy National Lampoon’s Animal House) from the comic book by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The supes in that storyline are a fairly direct parody of the X-Men superhero franchise, led by a mysterious psychic named John Godolkin; if we were to speculate at all, it would seem possible that Clancy Brown could be tapped to portray Godolkin in The Boys: Gen V as a stately, dignified authority figure. Of course, this being The Boys, things don’t work out well for anyone involved and everyone is kind of gross, but that’s the show for you.

If Clancy Brown has indeed been cast in The Boys: Gen V, it will add another notch to his very impressive comic book adaptation belt. Clancy Brown has already appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (via voiceover) as the fire demon Surtur in the acclaimed Thor: Ragnarok and voiced Superman villain Lex Luthor in the DC Animated Universe between 1996 and 2006. He also appeared in both the Daredevil and Punisher live-action series on Netflix as Ray Schoonover.

In addition to his superhero bonafides, Clancy Brown has appeared in notable films like the Paul Verhoeven science fiction classic Starship Troopers, the beloved Stephen King adaptation The Shawshank Redemption, and Michael Bay’s Bad Boys. What we are saying is, if Clancy Brown is in The Boys: Gen V, it’s going to be pretty great.
