Eddie Murphy will reunite with some old friends in Beverly Hills Cop 4. While recent set images hinted at the involvement of various original cast members in the Netflix project, Deadline confirmed the return of Judge Reinhold and John Ashton’s Detective Billy Rosewood and Sergeant Taggart. Paul Reiser’s sidekick cop, Jeffrey Friedman will also be making a comeback, along with Bronson Pinchot who starred as the sassy art gallery salesman in previous installments.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley is the fourth installment in the hit action-comedy franchise. It follows 1984’s Beverly Hills Cop, 1987’s Beverly Hills Cop II, and 1994’s Beverly Hills Cop III. In 2019, Netflix snagged the rights to release Beverly Hills Cop 4, which ditched the title’s roman numerals. Instead, the highly anticipated project is named after Eddie Murphy’s fish-out-of-water Detroit police officer who travels to Los Angeles to investigate crimes.

Beverly Hills Cop 4 is directed by Mark Molloy from a screenplay by Will Beall. While plot details have been kept firmly under wraps, the story is said to follow Axel Foley as he returns to 90210 to crack a new case. In the original movie, Detective Billy Rosewood and Sergeant John Taggart were hired to track Foley as he tried to solve the murder of his best friend.

Beverly Hills Cop was a massive commercial and critical hit. While launching a franchise, it also helped kick-start Eddie Murphy’s Hollywood career. However, the last time fans saw Axel Foley was in the less successful Beverly Hills Cop III. Since then, viewers have waited patiently to see a revival of the franchise. Now, after years of rumors and false starts, Beverly Hills Cop 4 is currently shooting in California. Taylour Paige and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have also been cast in undisclosed roles.

Speaking to Slash Film, Paul Reiser was asked about reuniting with Eddie Murphy for Beverly Hills Cop 4. The actor joked that he tries to “help Eddie out” whenever he can and to boost his career. Referencing his co-star’s ageless looks, the Stranger Things star said he was glad to see that he [Murphy] actually didn’t quite look 23 anymore. “It’s like, a year ago, this guy looks exactly the same,” the 66-year-old told the publication. The actor also reminisced about the amount of time that has passed since the first film, saying that he’s been “doing this for a long time.”

Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman are producing Beverly Hills Cop 4 for Jerry Bruckheimer Films along with Eddie Murphy. Charisse Hewitt-Webster and Ray Angelic will serve as executive producers, while Melissa Reid will co-produce the project for Jerry Bruckheimer Films. The release date for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley has yet to be announced by Netflix.

Meanwhile, away from Beverly Hills Cop 4, Eddie Murphy previously made the Netflix movie Dolemite Is My Name. The biographical comedy is directed by Craig Brewer from a script by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. Murphy stars as filmmaker Rudy Ray Moore, who is best known for having portrayed the Dolemite character in his stand-up routine and a series of blaxploitation films.
