The 2016 Ben Affleck movie The Accountant is finally getting a sequel. The Accountant 2 secured production tax credits from California, alongside 14 other films. That means production will likely begin sometime in 2024. Affleck is set to reprise his role as Christian Wolff, with director Gavin O’Connor and writer Bill Dubuque returning as well.

Ben Affleck Returns As Christian Wolff

But while the original 2016 film was distributed by Warner Bros. The Accountant 2 is said to be released by Amazon MGM Studios. The Accountant tells the story of Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck), a highly intelligent accountant with autism who works for various criminal organizations. His clients include mobsters, drug cartels, and other illicit enterprises.

Wolff Is An Accountant With A Set Of Special Skills

Wolff is not only a mathematical genius but also proficient in combat and weaponry due to the unconventional upbringing he received from his father. When Wolff is hired by a legitimate client called Living Robotics, he discovers financial irregularities that put him in the crosshairs of law enforcement and dangerous criminals.

As the authorities, led by Treasury Department director Raymond King (J.K. Simmons), close in on him, Wolff must use his unique skills to unravel a complex conspiracy and protect himself and those he cares about. Along with Ben Affleck and J.K Simmons, The Accountant featured Anna Kendrick, Jeffrey Tambor, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, and Jon Bernthal, who is expected to return to The Accountant 2.

A Blockbuster With Some Controversial Stereotypes

The Accountant earned $155 million at the global box office but received a mixed response from critics and viewers. While Affleck’s performance and the action sequences were praised, the film was criticized for its moral inconsistency as it portrayed Wolff positively despite him being a criminal. Critics also didn’t care for the film’s reliance on clichés and formulaic action movie tropes.

The movie faced scrutiny for its portrayal of autism, with concerns about it reinforcing stereotypes of autistic individuals as super-competent fighting machines. The Accountant 2 could be an opportunity to fix the mistakes of the first movie.

Jon Bernthal Returning

Director Gavin O’Connor previously stated that Brax (Jon Bernthal) will play a larger role in The Accountant 2. By introducing a dynamic where Ben Affleck’s character has someone to interact with, the story can move away from prolonged periods of him operating as a solitary accountant. Interestingly, the sequel is not the end of the road, as a third installment is currently in the works.

In a previous interview, O’Connor described The Accountant 2 as “Rain Man on steroids.” Meanwhile, the third movie will portray the brothers as an “odd couple,” much like a “buddy picture.” The sequel reportedly began pre-production in January 2024. Principal photography is scheduled to start sometime in March. The movie has no release date at this time.
