The Attack On Titan anime is finally coming to an end this year, and anime-only watchers will finally understand the full destructive force of The Rumbling. In the first episode of the final part of the final season, fans got to see the beginning of this destructive event, but what exactly is it? Ahead of the final episodes, we have our quick recap for you to catch you up.

If any of the Eldian’s enemies attempted to attack Paradis Island, he would unleash the Rumbling and trigger the end of the world that we’re now seeing in the final season of Attack on Titan.

Attack on Titan started out straightforward enough, with the remnants of humanity defending themselves against monstrous giants called Titans. The series has taken quite a few turns since then, but it can all be traced back to King Karl Fritz creating the Rumbling out of a desire to end war for good. Before the events of the series, Fritz took his people, the Eldians, to Paradis Island to live in a world that only knew peace.

To accomplish this, Fritz used the power of the Founding Titan to wipe the memories of everyone on the island and create three great walls made out of Colossal Titans. Fritz knew that enemies like the Marleyans and other conquering parties wouldn’t just let the Eldians be, so he created the wall as a form of mutually assured destruction.

While we’re seeing Attack on Titan finally make good on the foreshadowed promise of the Rumbling, King Fritz never intended to actually use the apocalyptic event he created.

While we’re seeing Attack on Titan finally make good on the foreshadowed promise of the Rumbling, King Fritz never intended to actually use the apocalyptic event he created. Instead, he would have accepted an attack as fate and would have let it happen.

The walls and the Colossal Titans were meant to act as mere deterrents, and it ended up working for long enough that everyone within the walls had forgotten their original intent.

In the most recent episode of Attack on Titan, we saw the beginning of The Rumbling and its terrible destructive power.

Fast forward to the beginning of Attack on Titan, and we meet Eren Yeager, who later learns he has the ability to transform into a Titan. During his fight with Annie, the Female Titan, a Colossal Titan’s face was revealed after a chunk of the wall was knocked off in the battle. This was our first hint about The Rumbling.

While the power of the Founding Titan was originally passed along to Fritz’s descendants, Eren’s father, Grisha, would steal the power, and the inheritance line was changed. This would lead to Eren changing his objective to start The Rumbling and destroy the world, putting an end to all attacks and violence.
