Snow White and the Evil Queen

The Daily Wire, a conservative media company, is producing its own adaptation of Snow White in response to the controversy generated by Disney’s upcoming live-action Snow White movie. Titled Snow White and the Evil Queen, the film features YouTuber Brett Cooper as the princess and is based on the original Brothers Grimm fairy tale, which has entered the public domain.

“It’s a story about a princess and a prince, about beauty and vanity, about love and its power to raise us from death to life. It’s our own adaptation of an ancient fairy tale.”

“It’s a story about a princess and a prince, about beauty and vanity, about love and its power to raise us from death to life,” Daily Wire co-founder Jeremy Boreing said of the film via The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s our own adaptation of an ancient fairy tale,” Boreing announced Snow White and the Evil Queen during the launch of Bentkey, Daily Wire’s new kid’s entertainment brand.

It’s taken 100 years to build Disney,” Boreing continued. “We know we aren’t what Disney is today, but we hope in time we might become what they were, once upon a time, a little studio with big ideas and the courage to chase them. While Disney still uses Walt’s name, they have all but abandoned his legacy,” he added, referencing the changes Disney made to Snow White in the new movie.

Disney’s live-action Snow White film is scheduled for release in 2024. However, the film has stirred controversy after certain project details were revealed. Problems began when Latina actress Rachel Zegler was cast as the titular character whose skin is described “as white as snow” in the source material.

“We know we aren’t what Disney is today, but we hope in time we might become what they were, once upon a time, a little studio with big ideas and the courage to chase them. While Disney still uses Walt’s name, they have all but abandoned his legacy.”

The seven dwarfs have also been swapped for seven magical creatures of varying sizes and genders. Zegler added to the backlash by confirming the remake will incorporate a “modern edge,” a departure from the original 1937 Snow White. The actress received further criticism after saying she wasn’t a fan of the original. She described the story as “weird” because the prince was “a guy who literally stalks her.”

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)

Zegler has also spoken about changing Snow White’s story to focus less on finding true love, a sentiment that fans of the original dubbed anti-feminist. They argue that women can still dream of true love without diminishing their power. As such, detractors often dismiss Disney’s live-action remakes as cash grabs that rarely hold up to the craftsmanship of the original animated films.

Snow White is directed by Marc Webb from a script by Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson. The project is co-produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Marc Platt Productions. It serves as a live-action adaptation of the 1937 animated classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which draws inspiration from the 1812 fairy tale of the same name by the Brothers Grimm.

Along with Rachel Zegler in the lead role of Snow White, Gal Gadot stars as the Evil Queen, Ansu Kabia as the Huntsman, Martin Klebba as Grumpy, Andrew Burnap as Jonathan, and Colin Michael Carmichael. The decision to remake Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was officially confirmed in October 2016. Filming primarily took place at Pinewood Studios in England from March to July 2022.

Modern Day Snow White

The Snow White fairy tale has been adapted in various ways over the years. Mirror Mirror in 2012 provided a comedic twist with Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen and Lily Collins as Snow White. The same year, Snow White and the Huntsman presented a more action-packed version with Kristen Stewart as a warrior Snow White. It also spawned a prequel/sequel, The Huntsman: Winter’s War, in 2016.

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs in 2019 turned the story on its head, focusing on princes transformed into dwarfs and promoting body positivity. These adaptations showcase the enduring appeal of the Snow White story, with each version offering its own unique interpretation and spin on the classic fairy tale.
