Alien: Romulus Unleashes Tons Of Violence And Scares, See The New Movie In Action

Alien: Romulus just dropped a teaser trailer, and it’s packed with plenty of creepy sci-fi vibes, violence, and a terrifying Xenomorph. Directed and co-written by Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe), the film seems to be returning to its claustrophobic roots, with most of the scenes taking place in the tight corridors of a spaceship. If Romulus can deliver on the vibes of the original Alien or even its more action-packed sequel, we could be in for a solid return to form for the franchise.

Even 20th Century Studios’ description of the teaser trailer says it takes the franchise “back to its roots.” Alien: Romulus will follow a group of young space colonizers who encounter the dangerous Xenomorphs while scavenging an abandoned space station. The film stars Caliee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu. It’s produced by Ridley Scott, who directed the original along with the less well-received entries Prometheus and Alien: Covenant

Alien: Romulus will be part of a two-pronged approach to bring the Alien franchise back to life.

While Alien: Romulus is reportedly taking a few aspects of the prequel films Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, the thorny lore and overly complicated narratives of those films will be kept to the side. Fans are hoping that the series can recapture the magic of the original, which was widely beloved for its tight direction, tense setting, terrifying creature design, and competent protagonist.

Alien: Romulus

Both Prometheus and Alien: Covenant were panned by fans for the questionable decision-making of characters who are supposedly scientists, along with the needless exposition and deep dive into the origin of the Xenomorphs. What fans really want is just some terrifying and mysterious alien creatures terrorizing characters that don’t constantly make incompetent decisions. The Alien: Romulus teaser doesn’t give us much to go by, but it does seem like it’s leaning more into what fans want.

While Alien: Romulus reportedly incorporates elements of the maligned prequel films into the plot, the FX series is, according to Hawley, ignoring those films altogether.

Alien: Romulus will be part of a two-pronged approach to bring the Alien franchise back to life. While Romulus is focused on bringing the franchise back to the big screen, we’ll also be getting a small screen entry in the form of an Alien TV series created by Noah Hawley (FX’s Fargo). Hawley has definitely shown he knows how to emulate the tone of classic films, as he did with the Coen Brothers’ Fargo, so there’s definitely hope he can do the same for the Alien franchise.

It will be interesting to see how both of these projects resonate with fans. In any case, everyone hopes that both the film and TV series can bring back those original feelings of terror and elation from Alien and Aliens.

We don’t have too much longer to wait to see what Alien: Romulus brings to the table. The film will be released in theaters on August 16. Meanwhile, Noah Hawley’s FX Alien series is set to debut in 2025, so stay tuned for more info on that project and Romulus
