Adam Sandler’s Best Upcoming Movie Gets Scrapped

By TeeJay Small | Published

Adam Sandler is best known for his leading roles in silly comedies like Billy Madison, The Water Boy, and recently, the Netflix animated adventure Leo. Despite his inclination toward lighthearted comedy, the Brooklyn-born actor has been known to display incredible talent, starring in dramatic films such as the Safdie brothers’ Uncut Gems. Unfortunately, according to World of Reel, it looks like Sandler’s second planned collaboration with Josh Safdie has been canceled.

The Safdie Brothers Reportedly Not On Good Terms

While tales of the film’s cancellation are still just rumors at this point, things certainly aren’t looking good for brothers Josh and Bennie Safdie at this time. Sources close to the filmmaking duo have disclosed that the pair will no longer work together on set, with one rumor stating the siblings are not currently on speaking terms. Furthermore, sources close to the untitled film production have stated that Adam Sandler and Josh Safdie are no longer getting along either.

Adam Sandler And Josh Safdie Won’t Work Together?

This is deeply unfortunate, as the Safdie brothers worked tirelessly to ensure Adam Sandler would be the lead in their previous feature effort, Uncut Gems. The upcoming Sophomore collaboration with Sandler was slated to begin production earlier this year, but had become mired with delays even before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes began in the late Spring. Of course, the strikes certainly didn’t help the film, as prolonged work stoppages prevented the creative team from accomplishing many of their pre-production goals, halting the schedule indefinitely.

Benny Safdie Pivots To Solo Projects And Acting

Now it seems that the film has been canceled entirely due in large part to bad blood between Josh and his creative partners. While there’s no word on Adam Sandler’s next move, perhaps he could still salvage the script by pivoting to work with Benny Safdie, provided the star doesn’t want to wash his hands of the entire familial spat. In the meantime, Benny has moved on with plans to direct a slew of solo films, while also appearing in a number of projects as an actor.

Benny Safdie’s Acting Credits

Most recently, Benny Safdie starred alongside Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone in The Curse, as well as taking small acting roles in films such as Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, and Oppenheimer. It has also been announced that Benny is working with A24 to helm a Dwayne Johnson film titled The Smashing Machine. As for Adam Sandler, it’s rumored that he may be working with Noah Baumbach for an upcoming film that remains untitled, so fans may still be treated to a rare dramatic performance in the near future.

Adam Sandler’s Career Shift

Adam Sandler has made it something of a career motif to do a deeply moving dramatic film once every handful of years, peppering these gems into a wide array of goofball comedies. Before signing on to star in Uncut Gems, the Safdie brothers were blown away by Sandler’s performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2002 film Punch-Drunk Love. Sandler has also given career-defining dramatic performances in films such as Reign Over Me, The Meyerowitz Stories, Spanglish, and Hustle.

While these reports are technically just rumors at this time, it unfortunately looks as though the Adam Sandler and Josh Safdie collaboration has been axed. There may still be time to revisit the script in the future, but fans should definitely not be holding their breath for the rumored film.
