Dramatic footage of a horrific explosion of an under-construction water park is making rounds on social media and news outlets, with shared videos depicting clouds of black some. The tragedy occurred in Gothenburg, Sweden, at the Oceana waterpark, part of Gothenburg’s Liseberg amusement park. The fire started at one of the water rides, but the exact cause of the explosion is still unknown.

A dramatic water park explosion in Sweden has injured a dozen and done over $10 million in damage.

The water park explosion set off multiple fires, engulfing outdoor water slides and adjacent facilities, many of which were under construction. The exact cause of the accident remains unknown, and the authorities reported that no one suffered any major injuries, given that the park still isn’t open to the public. However, one person is reported missing.

Furthermore, Gothenburg authorities advise those living in the area to stay indoors and keep windows closed to protect against the fumes. Additionally, the authorities have also ordered the evacuation of a nearby hotel. Considering that the entire water park, which cost $10.6 million to build, was entirely destroyed, the damage most likely exceeds the aforementioned sum since the water park explosion sent the debris flying. It’s estimated that only the steel structure of the burn-down water slides remains.

The site of the water park explosion, Lisebeerg, is the largest amusement park in Scandinavia.

It’s not outside the realm of possibilities for the steel construction to be scrapped as well, given that exposure to high temperatures often affects the structural integrity of the steel and exposes the metal to various chemicals released by other burning materials. Fortunately, apart from one missing person, nobody suffered any life-threatening injuries in the water park explosion since there were no visitors near the area. Oceana, the new addition to Lisebeerg, was supposed to have 14 different water attractions spread across 150,000 square feet.

From what we know so far, the water park explosion has irreparably damaged the Oceana complex…

To add more sadness to an already tragic event, the water park explosion tragedy struck close to the inauguration, which was scheduled for this summer, which would allow Liseberg, located in downtown Gothenburg, to accommodate more people. Liseberg opened its doors in 1923 as the largest amusement park in Scandinavia by area and number of visitors, with about three million visitors. In addition to the summer season, the park is open from October to December, albeit with fewer rides operating, hosting a Halloween season with various houses of horrors and a Christmas market.

From what we know so far, the water park explosion has irreparably damaged the Oceana complex; there were two subsequent explosions, so nothing is salvageable. For the time being, 12 people have been reported as injured, and one is missing, though it’s entirely possible for the number of injured to rise in the following days.
