Gina Carano is no longer the most popular star in the world. The actress was definitely one of the most talked-about celebrities for reasons that have been well-documented but calling her one of the most popular actresses doesn’t feel super accurate. Now, that honor has officially gone to Meghan Markle. And yes, it is probably because of everything that has happened in the last week or so. More on that below.
According to IMDB‘s Top Star Meter, Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, has passed the likes of Teyana Taylor, WandaVision star Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, KiKi Layne, Kathryn Hahn, and other big-name celebs to claim the top spot on the list.
Gina Carano may have had her time in the limelight, but the news cycle is fast and unrelenting, and it is easy—even inevitable—for even the biggest stories to be buried within days, weeks, and, rarely, months. That may have been what happened here. The former Star Wars actress is no longer in the top 100 on IMDB’s Star Meter, which is shocking because she was at the very top just a week or so ago.
Meghan Markle, on the other hand, has just been thrust into the mainstream spotlight once again, so it is safe to assume she has got a bit before the news cycle moves on to the next hot topic. On March 7, Oprah Winfrey interviewed Markle and her husband, Harry, the Duke of Sussex, about royalty, their lives, and everything in between. Apparently, this was enough to knock Gina Carano off her pedestal and cement Markle as the new Star Meter queen.
But, like Gina Carano, Meghan Markle is now facing some notable controversy. Earlier this month, just days before her Oprah interview, Markle found herself on the receiving end of some pretty serious accusations of workplace bullying from her press secretary, Jason Knauf. More specifically, Knauf alleged that Markle’s conduct drove Kensington palace aides to quit. A day later, Buckingham Palace kicked off an investigation into the claims. The people leading the investigation will reportedly be speaking to five people directly involved in and affected by the case. Whether or not it yields anything concrete remains to be seen.
This situation may have been what catapulted Markle to that “coveted” #1 spot. However, Markle has also recently been the butt of Graham Norton’s jokes, so maybe that is another factor contributing to her ever-ballooning fame.
The world may be losing interest in Gina Carano, but her fall from grace warrants discussion. She brought up a lot of accusations against Lucasfilm in her interview with Ben Shapiro that may or may not be true, but her social media posts proved her inability to use her platform kindly and responsibly.
It will be interesting to see just how long Meghan Markle has before this story–and this post in particular–are unceremoniously thrown aside for the next juicy, controversy-ridden piece of breaking news. If, like with Gina Carano, the public finds that she acted inappropriately, then things could get messier going forward.
