Although we’re still months away from the release of Matt Reeves’s The Batman, Warner Bros is already looking at the future of the DC Extended Universe. The studio hopes to expand the universe and has a few new projects in the works. This includes a prequel series about the goings-on in Gotham and a Catwoman movie with Zoe Kravitz in the lead role.

The move comes as a result of Warner Bros. being committed to Matt Reeves’ The Batman trilogy. And as reported by We’ve Got This Covered, both projects will be housed at HBO Max. There is no word on how far along they are with Kravitz’s Catwoman. But the streaming service has already given the green light to Reeves’s Gotham PD prequel series.

According to the writer/director, Gotham PD will be set during the first year of Batman’s career and will have a connection to 1987’s iconic Year One comic book story arc by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli.

Reeve’s also stated (via Den of the Geek) that the series will do a deep dive into the criminal aspect of Gotham City focusing on the corrupt police department and the corrupt inner workings of the city.

If given the go-ahead, the Catwoman movie will most likely focus on the early years of Gotham’s most notorious high-society thief. This will allow both films to seamlessly tie in with the series. It will be exciting to see Zoe Kravitz take on Selina Kyle. Especially since 2004’s Catwoman, starring Halle Berry, did so poorly with fans and critics alike.

The failure of Berry’s Catwoman was rather surprising since Selina Kyle is one of the more popular characters in the DC comic books. Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Selina Kyle made her comic book debut as “the Cat” in 1940’s Batman #1. She is one of the Dark Knight’s most enduring enemies and belongs to the collective of adversaries that make up the infamous rogues’ gallery. Over time the character has also been depicted as an anti-heroine and became Batman’s best-known love interest, with many stories depicting their complex love-hate relationship.

In the meantime, viewers can catch Zoe Kravitz alongside Robert Pattinson in The Batman. The film will focus on Batman’s second year of fighting crime, as he uncovers corruption in Gotham City that connects to his own family while facing a serial killer known as The Riddler.

Starring alongside Pattinson is a stellar supporting cast which includes Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, Jayme Lawson as Bella, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, and Peter Sarsgaard.

In recent times DC’s Extended Universe has successfully branched out into multiple formats, from feature films, television series, and animated series. So it will be interesting to see how new versions of the familiar DC characters are received on screen.

The Batman is currently scheduled for release on March 4, 2022.
