Hugh Jackman is known for a lot of things in his career, expanding out his acting skills even into musicals over recent years. Though when it’s all said and done, the actor will forever be tied to the adamantium-clawed, rapid-healing, quick-to-temper Wolverine we first saw in X-Men more than two decades ago. But if you think you’ve seen the last of him slashing away with a stogey in his mouth, think again. Recent rumors are out there that Jackman is set to reprised his role as Wolverine in an upcoming movie.

As part of Marvel’s Phase Four, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will act as sequels to both the original Doctor Strange as well as Avengers: Endgame. And with the X-Men properties set to return to the Disney stable, there’s word Hugh Jackman could make an appearance as Wolverine in this mind and universe bending adventure.

The last we saw of him, Wolverine had met his end in Logan, a beautiful and bloody tribute to the character’s violent though oddly heartwarming and fatherly nature. With his healing powers in major decline (the guy was over 150 years old at that point) Logan is tasked with one last mission to both save Professor Charles Xavier who’s own mental acuity has gone south. He also has to shepherd a young mutant, Laura, to safety. Laura, with powers much like his own is where Logan meets salvation and he dies saving her life. It was a fantastic ending for the character whose story has taken a number of twists and turns.

So seeing Hugh Jackman back on screen as Wolverine wouldn’t seem to make a lot of sense. But these are comic book movies we are talking about and timelines/ linear threads/ continuums are of little consequence in these worlds. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness makes for just one of those “places” to ignore the past and bring back characters to the screen. As we’ve said before, the Marvel Multiverse has been a way for the comic book house to reinvent stories and alter timelines for its characters. With the idea that multiple, concurrent worlds are playing out across infinity, we don’t need to worry too much about what’s happened in the past.

Hugh Jackman/ Wolverine isn’t the only past Marvel actor/ character linked to this project either. Tobey Maguire has also been rumored to be in active negotiations to take another spin as Spider-man. So it would seem the studio would like to go all-in on the idea that everything ever put up on the screen with the Marvel name is fair game in a world of infinite possibilities.

They are already playing fast and loose with other characters whose endings seemed rather definitive; it isn’t just Hugh Jackman. Recent rumors have Chris Evans as Captain America set to reprise his role in Marvel Comics’ Secret Wars. This would be another trip off the planet and into another dimension. There are X-Men rumors tied to this movie as well considering the source material, but no official Wolverine sightings there just yet.

The Wolverine name is making plenty of rounds around the rumor mill these days with Stranger Things cast member Dacre Montgomery lightly-rumored to take over the claws and hairdo. The Australian actor has been known to front run some of these characters and rumors in the past, but there’s at least some smoke with that rumor fire considering the onslaught of casting news we are again. New iterations on characters don’t mean we’ve left the originals behind.

It isn’t just art and virtue that would put Hugh Jackman back in this role. Word is that the studio is planning on backing up the Brink’s Truck with a huge offer made for even a Wolverine cameo. Considering the Marvel Cinematic Universe basically prints money at this point, it’s hard to imagine negotiations come too far in the way. I suspect this mostly comes down to whether or not Jackman wants to do it.

In all, Marvel’s Phase Four is really setting up to be something spectacular. That’s saying something considering everything we got from Phase Three, but just the sheer amount of star and firepower coming to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as well as Thor: Love & Thunder, a Spider-Man sequel, Eternals and Black Widow this is setting up to be as big as ever. And that doesn’t even include the small screen fare like WandaVision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, She-Hulk, and more. It’s a massive lineup with Hugh Jackman’s name just one of the plethora attached (or rumored) to take the screen.
