Guardians Of The Galaxy Gets A 1950s Style Poster And More

Like Star Wars and the Indiana Jones movies, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy captures the high adventure, excitement, and swashbuckling fun of the pulp serials of an earlier time. With that in mind, the film, which doesn’t even open until Friday (more realistically on Thursday night), has unveiled an awesome new 1950s sci-fi inspired poster, as well as a collection of offerings from Mondo.
This throwback, which comes from MTV, is spot on. You can imagine this hanging in an old style movie palace or advertising the back half of a double feature at your local drive-in theater, you know, when such things were far more commonplace. The bright color, the aged appearance, and even the “Presented in Realistic 3-Dimensions” bit down in the corner are all fantastic touches. You can even picture this as the era-specific cover for a tie-in novelization, which is something you know that you would totally enjoy.
Stylistically, this poster is almost exactly what I anticipate when I hear the phrase “Mondo Poster,” and it hits all the right notes, showing off all of the key characters. There’s the main core, including Peter Jason Quill, aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel). You also see Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), the main villain of our story, bald ass-kicker Nebula (Karen Gillan), who is Gamora’s adopted sister, alien archer Yondu (Michael Rooker), and more.
This one of Star-Lord looming in a doorway, wearing that mask of his, makes him look like total badass. That’s one side of his personality, while the other is a sarcastic smart-ass man-child.
If you’re waiting to see Drax straight up take people apart, you won’t be disappointed with Guardians of the Galaxy.
The same goes for Gamora. And it’s even better when she finally comes to blows with Nebula. We’ve see hints and pieces of this during the build up, but the actual moment when this happens in the movie is going to be one of your favorites of the bunch.
And yes, Rocket is just as much fun as you want a heavily armed, anthropomorphic varmint bounty hunter to be.
But Rocket is also super cuddly and adorable, as you can clearly see when he hugs his BFF Groot. They’re super cute together, and provide some of the most intense and emotional moments of the entire film.
While Groot may be an eight-foot-tall, shape-shifting, alien tree that only says three words—“I am Groot”—as he beats the crap out of bad guys, he also has a soft, gentle side. This image of him staring at a tiny butterfly perfectly encapsulates this part of the character.
