Marvel President Kevin Feige Dishes Guardians of the Galaxy Details

Guardians of the Galaxy has quickly become one of the most anticipated movies in the Phase Two of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. If the comic book movie is successful with general audiences, there’s no telling how deep Marvel can go to deliver strange and outrageous films. It seems like Marvel is handling Guardians of the Galaxy as if it were The Avengers, which means feel that confident with all of their properties, including their most obscure. While not much is known about the cosmic team of peacekeepers, Marvel producer Kevin Feige wants to shed some light on Marvel’s newest cinematic superheroes.
In an interview with Empire Magazine (via Comic Book Movie), Feige gives some insight on all the members of the Guardians team, including Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax The Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot. He explains the backgrounds and histories of each member of the team before we meet them at the beginning of the movie. Feige explained:
They are an unlikely band. It’s pure circumstance that brings them all together throughout the course of the movie. Rocket has been genetically and mechanically altered, he’s an experiment from one part of the galaxy. Groot is a species that happens to look like trees look, and is quite communicative if you can understand the different inflections in the way he says, “I am Groot.”
Groot and Rocket Raccoon are certainly the most unusual members of the Guardians of the Galaxy. If Marvel can sell an audience on these characters, then there may be no limit to the extent of their powers. It’s hard enough it introduce one new character to an audience, but director James Gunn has to introduce an entire team of superheroes, as well as a new universe that is far stranger than anything we’ve seen so far in the Marvel universe. The “human” element of the film will go a long way to keep audiences invested. Kevin Feige continued:
Peter Quill left Earth in the mid 80s, but when we meet back up with him he’s very much a citizen of the universe. Drax has one goal and one goal only, which is to kill Ronan because of a past tragedy. When we meet Gamora, she’s a bad guy working with Ronan and Nebula and Korath, and by extension for Thanos. Gamora doesn’t necessarily like doing that anymore, and tries to find a new path for herself. But she has a reputation as the deadliest woman in the galaxy that people aren’t greeting her with open arms.
Meanwhile, Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) is rumored to join the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy to voice the character of Rocket. If true, Cooper is the last addition to the core cast, which has been impressive to say the least. Marvel Studios has a way of casting actors that other upstart comic book studios can’t match (I’m looking at you Warner Bros/DC Comics).
Gunn wrote and is directing, while composer Tyler Bates recently signed on to score the film. Gunn describes the film as being about “a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.” Guardians of the Galaxy stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Benicio del Toro, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Michael Rooker, Olivia Lovibond, John C. Reilly, and Glenn Close as Nova Prime.
Currently in production, the film hits theaters everywhere on August 1, 2014.
