Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the animated take on alternate timelines and dimensions in the Spider-Man Universe was one of the surprise movies from 2019. It was one of the best flicks of that year, animated or otherwise, combining laugh-out-loud humor with a sweet story about youth, family, growing up and the responsibility that comes with power. Now it’s time to get ready for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 which they’ve officially titled as Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse.
The first movie hit a lot of the typical Spider-Man beats while also ushering in a bold and innovative new style that culminated in one of the best visually designed scenes from any movie, with Miles Morales finally realizing the scope of his abilities, “What’s Up Danger” playing in the background. It was such a defining moment with Miles finally taking the “leap” and embracing his fate. It still gives me chills watching.
Considering the success of the first film, with almost $380 million at the box office (on a $90 million budget) along with massive critical acclaim hitting a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it seemed pretty obvious that we’d see Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 sometime in the future.
The Miles Morales character alone could be the focal point of a sequel. But Into the Spider-Verse was also structured in such a way that there are nearly limitless possibilities seeing as how the movie introduced so many other versions of the web-slinger including lethargic Peter Parker, Gwen Stacey’s Spider-Woman, Peter Porker/Spider-Ham, Peni Parker as SP//dr and Spider-Man Noir. So yeah, there are quite a number of ways to roll here.
With all of this, there is already quite a bit known about the planned sequel and how the stories might continue for at least some of these characters. Let’s take a look at what we know about Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2.
THE FIRST TRAILER FOR SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE 2
The first trailer for Spider-Verse: Into the Spider-Verse 2 dropped in the beginning of December 2021. It picks up right where the first film left off (not counting post-credits scenes), with Miles in his room and being contacted by Gwen. We also get a preview of Miles traveling through the multiverse, and for some reason being attacked by Miguel O’Hara — the Spider-Man of 2099.
The teaser also reveals a new release date of October 7, 2022 and the fact that the sequel will apparently be a two-parter. Due to delays, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Part One will now be released on June 2, 2023, with another sequel to follow in 2024.
INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE 2 AND THE LOVE STORY
Vanity Fair reported about a year ago that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2‘s script will feature a budding romance between Miles and Gwen Stacy, something awkwardly and humorously alluded to in the original. Considering Stacy’s Spider-Woman was much more competent and capable with her abilities in the first movie, it could lead to some parts of the relationship dealing with their gap in potential and confidence.
This was certainly part of the first movie. And considering the first film ended with the two able to communicate even though they were separated by dimensions, the groundwork for the new story is already set up.
Other than that, not much else is known from a Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 plot perspective. Though there is a cryptic tweet from Chris Lord…
…in which he lets on that Japanese Spider-Man/ Takuya Yamashiro will be featured in the sequel. We don’t know much else.
Could we even see Tom Holland’s version of Spider-man somehow work his way into the mix? Considering the amount of creativity and latitude the first one had, almost anything is on the table right now for this franchise.
And, of course, we know that Miles Morales and company will be hurtling through different Multiverse situations as part of this movie. It’s Across the Spider-Verse, after all.
SHAMEIK MOORE, HAILEE STEINFELD, AND JAKE JOHNSON ARE BACK
As far as IMDb is concerned, on a character level, only Miles (voiced by Shameik Moore) is confirmed as part of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2. But from what we know about the story, it’s a safe assumption that Gwen Stacy (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld) is back as well, even though it’s not officially confirmed.
We could be looking at near wholesale changes for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2. Across the board, the team of creatives looks completely different than the original. Phil Lord (Lego Movies) wrote the first movie along with Rodney Rothman (22 Jump Street) but the script for the sequel will be penned this time around by Dave Callaham who has writing credits on Zombieland 2: Double Tap and 2010’s The Expendables.
Additionally, Rotham, Peter Ramsey and Bob Persicetti all directed the first one but this time around Joaquim dos Santos will be in the big chair. His resume is mostly from the animated television series world with shows like Legend of Korra, G.I. Joe: Resolute and Avatar: The Last Airbender under his belt. This will be his first full-length animated feature film.
OSCAR ISAAC AND ISSA RAE PORTRAYED OTHER VERSIONS OF SPIDEY
Because there are going to be a number of different Spider-Man versions, there are also going to be a number of different voice actors coming into the mix. Oscar Isaac will be playing the Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099 version of the character. By the billing, this will be a major role in the movie. And it looks like this version of Spidey will be into creating a lot of destruction, something different than we’ve seen in other examples of the wall-crawler.
And then there is Issa Rae who will be Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman with word that this version will be pregnant. That’s another new wrinkle we haven’t seen on the big screen with this character.
SHAMEIK MOORE WAS EMBROILED IN SOCIAL MEDIA CONTROVERSY
Shameik Moore is the voice of Miles Morales and the star of the Into The Spider-Verse franchise… for now. But after some May 2020 comments on Twitter, activists started lobbying for him to be fired from Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse 2.

Miles Morales was one of the top trending topics on Twitter in May 2020, with nearly everyone in that trending topic calling for Shameik Moore to be replaced in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2. There has been no response from Sony Pictures.
ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE RELEASED IN THEATERS ON JUNE 2, 2023
Okay, what gives? Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse first hit movie theaters in 2018 and no one (except for those closest to the film) could expect what followed. A near-perfect animated feature that eventually went on to grab a Best Animation Oscar Award. There was immediate talk of a sequel and fans were thrilled when word came out that not just one sequel was on the way, but two.
The same group is returning for a second and third go around in the Spider-Verse, so the film hitting a snag is kind of surprising. This would actually make the third time the release date has changed for the highly anticipated sequel. Sony first had it on its release calendar for an April 8, 2022 premiere. That was eventually pushed back to roll out on October 7, 2022. Now, Sony has moved it even further back as fans can hopefully be expecting it shoots its web across the screen on June 2, 2023. Yikes, that is a big delay.
Sony has yet to give a reason why the film was once again pushed back and neither have Phil Lord or Christopher Miller. The closest we got to any comment was Miller’s tweet saying that it allowed the Spider-Verse team “more time to make it great.” Lord remains mum.
As mentioned, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 is the first part of a two-part sequel. So far, the shift and delay in the first part do not seem to have changed the date of the second part, which now stands to come out less than a year after the first part premieres. The official Twitter page of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse also tweeted out the “shift in the multi-verse” showing the new date for the sequel. It also showed that Part 2 remains on the calendar to come out on March 29, 2024.
In its place, Sony is now releasing the live-action/CGI musical comedy Lyle, Lyle Crocodile which is based on a series of books by Bernard Waber. The film will star Javier Bardem and Constance Wu with Lyle being voiced by Shawn Mendes.
