With the 43rd Annual San Diego Comic-Con International kicking off later this week, many movie studios are getting their stars, movie trailers, and promotional materials ready to win over attendees of the massive pop culture convention. This year fans will get the opportunity to watch exclusive materials and to meet their favorite celebrities from upcoming science fiction films like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The World’s End, and Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity. Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. are planning to make a big splash with their upcoming Godzilla reboot, and now director Gareth Edwards is teasing fans with what they should expect to see in San Diego this year.

As noted in the video above, Edwards and his production team are getting close to wrapping up principal photography on Godzilla. That could mean the big surprise he mentions will be the monster movie’s first trailer? It would be the perfect opportunity to debut a Godzilla teaser for the Hall H audience.

Gareth Edwards has been a constant presence with Godzilla ever since Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. first announced the project at last year’s Comic-Con International. Godzilla was the biggest surprise during Legendary and Warner Bros.’ presentation of Man of Steel and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, so it seems fitting that Edwards would return to San Diego with the monster movie ready to dazzle convention goers.

The Godzilla director is no stranger to social media. Edwards has been using YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook as a way to update fans on the film’s production since the first day of shooting back in March. Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull fully endorses Edwards’ use of social media, and it’s very refreshing to see a CEO of a major film production company be so willing to share the filmmaking process with fans.

Not only did Gareth Edwards tease what’s to come this week for Comic-Con, Legendary and Warner Bros. also revealed the new poster for Godzilla’s appearance at the convention. It’s a pretty impressive piece of work, if you ask me. The Comic-Con poster features a collapsed building taking the form of Godzilla. It not only conveys the destruction we will surely find in the new monster movie, but it also illustrates Godzilla’s scale to a crumbing city.

Godzilla will be part of Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.’ Comic-Con panel on Saturday, July 20, along with the aforementioned Gravity, 300: Rise of an Empire, Seventh Son, and The Lego Movie. While it’s unclear which members from Godzilla will participate in the Hall H presentation, Gareth Edwards, Bryan Cranston (who will also be in San Diego for the final Breaking Bad panel at Comic-Con), and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (also at Comic-Con for Kick-Ass 2) are expected to participate.

Godzilla features an all-star cast including Elisabeth Olsen, Ken Watanabe, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn, Bryan Cranston, and Sally Hawkins, with original Godzilla actor Akira Takarada putting in a special cameo appearance.

Godzilla will roar into theaters everywhere on May 16, 2014, in 3D and IMAX.
