Simon Pegg And Edgar Wright’s The Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy Gets A MegaMix

This Friday will see the release of the third and final movie in Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright’s “Three Flavours Cornetto (Blood and Ice Cream) trilogy” with The World’s End. It’s hard to believe that this series of genre movies started back in 2004 with the release of Shaun of the Dead, but nine years later we’re finally seeing it all come to an end. During this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Edgar Wright took to the Hall H stage and presented The World’s End to the geek crowd. One of the highlights of the presentation was a megamix of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End. Check it out above!
San Francisco DJ Mike Relm (Michael Wong) put together this megamix, which he is calling “The Cornetto Megamix.” It’s pretty amazing! It follows the chronological release of each movie. The video is almost just as exciting as watching one of the films itself. You’ve really got to hand it to Relm for putting this video together. It’s also refreshing to see Edgar Wright release this video online, even though it was exclusive to Hall H and San Diego Comic-Con.
The Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy is a thematic one rather than a traditional narrative trilogy. All the films are connected as genre send-ups, and each film features its main characters buying, eating, or wanting a different flavor of Cornetto brand ice cream. Shaun of the Dead was strawberry ice cream, which represents the red blood and gore of the horror genre. Hot Fuzz used the blue original Cornetto flavor, which ties into the blue police uniforms of the buddy cop/action genre. Lastly, The World’s End showcases mint-flavored ice cream, with the green representing the movie’s science fiction elements. While Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright didn’t originally plan on making a trilogy, it’s effective and clever nevertheless.
A few weeks ago, Edgar Wright released an annotated and interactive screenplay for Shaun of the Dead, which is one of the best screenplays of the last decade, if you ask me. As expected, Wright followed suit with the interactive screenplay for Hot Fuzz. While it’s doubtful he’ll do the same for The World’s End just yet, perhaps we’ll get the interactive screenplay for The World’s End once it hits home video. Who knows, maybe Edgar Wright will give us one for Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World too.
In The World’s End, Simon Pegg stars as Gary King, a 40-year-old man-child who refuses to grow up and act his age. Twenty years after he and his childhood friends failed to complete an epic pub-crawl called “The Golden Mile,” King gets the gang back together to re-create that fabled evening and finally make it to the final bar, The World’s End. As they drunkenly stumble from pub to pub, they soon realize the dark truth beneath the sleepy township of Newton Haven. Killer alien robots have invaded, and they’re looking to destroy all humans. Can Gary and his mates save their hometown, while at the same time completing The Golden Mile?
The World’s End stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Rosamund Pike, Eddie Marsan, David Bradley, and Paddy Considine, while the science fiction film hits theaters everywhere this Friday, August 23.
