It would seem that Ubisoft is having some trouble handling its classic titles, considering that the Prince of Persia: The Sand of Time remake has been delayed indefinitely, several games were canceled, and the company decided to pull the plug on several Splinter Cell projects, including the VR version of the game. It was previously thought that the same fate befell Beyond Good & Evil 2, a sequel to the legendary Beyond Good & Evil from 2003. Luckily, a recent bit of news point to the contrary.

As reported by IGN, Beyond Good & Evil 2 just got its new Lead Writer, Sarah Arellano, who tweeted that she’s joining the project believed to be stuck in development hell, considering that there was very little news about the title since its announcement in 2017. Arellano previously worked as Narrative Designer for Blizzard on World of Warcraft, which is getting another expansion by the year’s end, and at Volition, the studio responsible for Saints Row games. This is fantastic news for Beyond Good & Evil 2 fans, as it indicates that the game is still in development at Ubisoft.

Since its announcement, which included a fantastic trailer for the game, there wasn’t much mention of Beyond Good & Evil 2 except in Ubisoft’s earning reports, which could indicate that the company hasn’t given up on the game. On the other hand, Ubisoft missed the game’s beta testing, originally scheduled for the end of 2019, and other issues also plagued the game. This includes the loss of its director in 2020, who left the company due to alleged involvement in sexual misconduct incidents and their coverups within the company — leading many to believe that the game was canceled.

The fact that Beyond Good & Evil 2 finally got its writer is fantastic news. From what we know so far — which is admittedly very little — the upcoming game is a prequel to the original, in which the first game’s protagonist, Jade, appears as a villain. This lines up well with the narrative of the first game, as it would finally explain her origins and the connection with the game’s villainous faction, the Domz, and her role as their source of power. Whether the upcoming game’s narrative decides to tackle those burning questions is still a mystery.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 is a long-awaited sequel to the 2003’s action-adventure stealth game developed and published by Ubisoft. The narrative follows the adventures of Jade, an investigative reporter and martial artist working with a resistance movement to reveal a sinister alien conspiracy within the planetary government — mostly by obtaining photographic evidence. The game was a commercial failure at launch, despite being well received by the critics and the audience.

It eventually reached critical acclaim and a cult following due to its meaningful story and freedom, leading it to become one of the greatest video games ever made — along with 2003’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Star Wars: The Knights of the Old Republic. The game’s compelling narrative and fantastic gameplay prompted the fandom to start numerous petitions over the years, begging Ubisoft to finally make Beyond Good & Evil 2.
