This isn’t Sparta, but it’s close enough. Divisive filmmaker Zack Snyder just got the rights back to a script he originally pitched as a 300 (2006) sequel titled Blood and Ashes. The director recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he and producer partner/wife Deborah Snyder got the rights to Blood and Ashes back from Warner Bros. and are free to shop it around to other studios.

Zack Snyder Wrote The 300 Sequel For Warner Bros.

Zack Snyder first wrote the screenplay for Blood and Ashes during the production of Netflix’s Army of the Dead (2019). The project was the last thing Snyder worked on for Warner Bros. before the two parted ways following Justice League. While Zack originally envisioned Blood and Ashes as a sequel to his massive hit film 300, it soon mutated into something else entirely.

The Story

According to Zack Snyder, Blood and Ashes revolves around the relationship between historical conqueror Alexander the Great and his second in command, Haphaestion. This LGBT love story, which also happens to be an action-filled war epic taking place in ancient Greece, was loved and even championed by former Warner exec Courtney Valenti at one point. The rest of Warner Bros., however, didn’t share her enthusiasm for the project. For whatever reason—be it the subject matter or Warner Bros. and Zack’s rocky relationship following the JL debacle—the studio ultimately passed on the movie. Thankfully, the rights reverted back to Zack Snyder and crew, leaving the director free to make it himself if and when he decides to.

Zack Snyder Regains The Rights

“We got the rights back so we can make if we want it,” Snyder told The Hollywood Reporter.  “I don’t know what the marketplace is for an incredibly homoerotic, super violent, super sexual movie. But maybe it’s perfect.” the director added. Indeed, if the recent rise in queer horror is any indication, blood lust and a sick fascination with onscreen carnage is not an exclusively hetero thing.

Blood And Ashes Could Become A Netflix Project

In the current pop culture landscape, a movie like Blood and Ashes could really clean up at the box office.Zack and Deborah Snyder’s production company, Stone Quarry, has an overall film deal with Netflix, making it possible that the streamer may be the one to eventually commission the production of Blood and Ashes.

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon

First, however, Zack Snyder has to finish work on his Rebel Moon franchise.Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire premieres December 22 on Netflix, with Part Two expected in April 2024. In addition to those two films, Zack Snyder has plans to turn the series into the equivalent of his own Star Wars franchise. Along with Rebel Moon 3, which he’s already in the process of writing, Snyder has plans for a video game RPG based on the property as well as an animated project and a graphic novel.

Zack Snyder’s Army Of The Dead Franchise

Meanwhile, the director is also hard at work expanding the universe he created within the zombie epic Army of the Dead (2021). Synder already followed up Army of the Dead with a prequel titled Army of Thieves (also 2021) and is now working on a sequel as well as several spinoffs. With all of the projects he’s currently juggling, it may be a while before we see Zack Snyder’s Blood and Ashes actually hit the screen.
