Marvel’s What If Season 2 Trailer Goes Mad Max And Three Musketeers

By Douglas Helm | Published

Marvel is giving us quite the gift for the holidays, as the animated What If…? series is back for Season 2 and will be releasing nine episodes over the course of nine consecutive days. Marvel dropped the new trailer for the multiversal show, and it looks like it might be even wilder and wackier than the first season. The trailer shows off many returning characters, along with a brand new character that is original to the MCU.

Of course, as the trailer shows, Jeffrey Wright’s enigmatic The Watcher will return to narrate and guide us through the multiverse of What If…? Based on the Marvel Comics series of the same name, this Disney+ anthology series presents alternative timelines of major MCU events and shows us different variants of beloved characters in the multiverse.

Episodes in the previous season showed us scenarios like Ultron defeating the Avengers and obtaining the Infinity Gauntlet, T’Challa becoming Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill, and Peggy Carter getting the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers.

The trailer of What If…? Season 2 gave us a glimpse of what we can expect to see this time around. Clips showed Valkyrie and Tony Stark in a Mad Max-like race, the Avengers team from the 1980s, and even a Renaissance-era episode that seems to be based on the 1602 Avengers. There also appears to be a Die Hard-like Christmas episode where Stark Tower is compromised.

What If…? Season 2

One of the most interesting things we see in the What If…? Season 2 trailer is the introduction of the new, original MCU character Kahhori. Kahhori is a Mohawk woman who gains powers from the Tesseract when it lands on Earth in pre-colonial New York. Perhaps she’ll be joining the Guardians of the Multiverse that The Watcher assembled to battle Ultron in the previous season.

It will be interesting to see if there are any elements from What If..? Season 2 end up making the jump to the greater MCU storyline. We saw a Captain Carter variant show up in live-action for Doctor Stranger in the Multiverse of Madness. The previous season also had a Marvel Zombies episode, and now we’re getting a spin-off series of that premise in 2024.

Key cast members returning for What If…? Season 2 include Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell), Black Widow (Lake Bell), Captain America (Josh Keaton), and The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright), though there are going to be plenty more new and returning faces as well. The series is directed by Bryan Andrews and created by head writer A.C. Bradley, who are also both credited as executive producers on the series. It should be interesting to see what multiversal shenanigans they have cooked up this time around.

While we wait for the animated multiverse of What If…? Season 2, you can check out the full second season of the series that introduced the MCU’s multiverse, Loki, on Disney+ now. The latest MCU film, The Marvels, is also currently in theaters. Make sure to check out the first episode of What If…? Season 2 when it hits Disney+ on December 22.
