The Most Twisted ’90s Sci-Fi Thriller Ever Is Now Better Than Ever

By Douglas Helm | Published

If you’re a big fan of David Cronenberg’s twisted 1999 thriller eXistenZ, then you won’t want to miss out on the newest version of the film. Vinegar Syndrome is releasing a special limited edition 2-disc version of the film in glorious (and gross because this is Cronenberg) 4K UHD/Blu-ray. Not only that, but the special edition of the 4K UHD disc comes with a spot gloss “flesh-textured” hard slipcase and slipcover combo designed by Haunt Love.

Existenz Limited Edition

The special edition of eXistenZ also includes a 40-page bound book and is only available on Vinegar Syndrome’s website and some select small retailers. In other words, if you want to get your hands on this special edition, you’ll want to hurry because they only have 10,000 units available, though they presumably have more available with the standard edition. With that being said, it wouldn’t be surprising if Cronenberg fans snap these up fast, so you might want to get your hands on it soon, especially if you want to give a very disturbing holiday present to a Cronenberg friend or family member.

A One-Of-A-Kind Film

eXistenZ is definitely a one-of-a-kind film where video games have evolved and can interact with players on a molecular level. To jack into the game, players use an electronic umbilical cord. Allegra Geller creates the titular virtual reality game, which is controversial due to its reality-warping features. After Allegra is almost murdered by anti-game protesters during a demo, she discovers the master copy of the game may have been damaged and goes into the world of the game with her publicist, Ted Pikul, to test things out.

The Cast

eXistenZ is, of course, directed by David Cronenberg and stars a stacked cast that includes Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jude Law, Willem Dafoe, Ian Holm, Sarah Polley, Christopher Eccleston, Don McKellar, and Callum Keith Rennie. Creature effects for the film were handled by Stephan Dupuis (Scanners). The film is definitely a wild ride and one worth checking out if you’re a fan of sci-fi horror and want to see this film in 4K UHD.

What Comes In The Special Edition

This Vinegar Syndrome release of eXistenZ is also packed with tons of other extra features for fans of the film and Cronenberg to really sink their teeth into. Along with the special edition cover and the newly restored 4K footage, the film also includes a new commentary track from film historian Dr. Jennifer Moorman. You can also check out archival commentary tracks from Cronenberg himself, cinematographer Peter Suschitzky, and visual effects supervisor Jim Isaac.

New Interviews With The Cast And Crew

This release of eXistenZ also comes with several brand-new in-depth interviews. The interviews include an interview with art director Tamara Deverell, an interview with make-up effects artist Stephan Dupuis, an interview with producer Robert Lantos, and an interview with opening title designer Robert Pilichowski. Also featured are archival interviews with Cronenberg, visual effects supervisor Jim Isaac, Jude Law, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Willem Dafoe.

With this version of eXistenZ being in 4K UHD, it definitely seems like the best time to check out this 90s sci-fi classic. Of course, the hours of extra content and special cases don’t hurt either. Make sure to check it out soon if you’re hoping to get a copy.
