Tom Cruise is a legendarily handsome and youthful movie star, and yet he still got friend-zoned by a pop icon...for a really odd reason.

Tom Cruise has always had a bit of an interesting romantic life. He has dated and been married to some of the most beautiful women in the world, like Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, and Mimi Rogers. He started off his career in the same group of 1980s heartthrobs as Johnny Depp, Rob Lowe, and hunkiest of all, Richard Grieco. And since he has maintained and refined his boyish good looks in a nearly-disconcerting manner, it is odd to imagine that even Tom Cruise, movie star, real-life daredevil, and alleged Operating Thetan VIII also has been friend-zoned in his life. And actual royalty, no less. So, what we’re ramping up to here is the reports that Diana, Princess of Wales said she would not date Tom Cruise because he was too short

We are treading on some tender ground here, so we will start this off by stating that according to most studies that can be found on this subject, the average global height of an adult male is approximately 5’ 7” (or 171cm, if you’re metric nasty). Reportedly, Tom Cruise himself is about 5’ 7”. So, in reality, the star of Top Gun: Maverick is a very fine and normal height for anyone to be. However, according to Darren McGrady, the former personal chef to the British Royal Family, upon meeting Cruise, Princess Diana told him that he was too short for her to date. Here’s the exact Tweet by which the chef let us all know this information:

Given that Darren McGrady is indicating this exchange took place in or around the set of Tom Cruise’s 1996 film Mission: Impossible (directed by Brian De Palma), this probably would have taken place in 1995, when principal photography was being shot. This would thus make it about a year and a half before Diana’s tragic death in Paris in 1997, so there is at least some comfort in knowing that turning down Tom Cruise because he was too short was not one of her last acts. It is in keeping with her legendary reputation as the “People’s Princess” that she would also have this widespread preference, and it certainly was her prerogative to have that. Still…a bit of a bummer for everyone involved.

That said, several decades later, Tom Cruise remains one of the biggest movie stars in the world and we hear tell, may even be popping up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe soon. Maybe nearly as importantly, he also may soon be the first person to film a movie in space, but still, MCU, right? Although Cruise has had some high-profile flops over the years (Dark Universe, anyone), he’s had the kind of career that most actors could only dream of. For her part, Diana remains an important part of culture, with films, television series, and stage musicals still being made of her brief life to this day. It seems their romance was simply not to be, but hopefully, Darren McGrady will have some new tidbits of royal relationships to offer in the future.
