G.I. Joe is one of the most easily recognized toy brands of all time, which begs the question, why aren’t the movies based on these armed action figures being cranked out as frequently as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Transformers films? The franchise has had three live-action installments in recent years, with the most recent film, G.I. Joe: Snake Eyes premiering in 2021.
Though Snake Eyes bombed at the box office, many fans have been questioning if and when we will receive another G.I. Joe movie in the same cinematic universe any time soon.
G.I. Joe will likely tie-in with the ongoing Transformers film given the reference in Transformers Rise of the Beasts.
The financial aftermath of G.I. Joe: Snake Eyes likely left Hasbro and Paramount Pictures a bit weary of future installments in the series, particularly with shutdowns regarding the COVID-19 virus impacting global box office numbers. Of course, the recent release of the Barbie film has shown that Hasbro Toys can find massive success by licensing their products to film studios, to the tune of nearly $1.5 billion.
The toy company and former Death Row Records owners even have plans to launch a cinematic universe of Hasbro-owned properties, including films centered on Power Rangers, Monopoly, Play-Doh, and even a few new G.I. Joe movies.
The latest news regarding an upcoming G.I. Joe movie seems to confirm that the film will be titled G.I. Joe: Ever Vigilant, and will likely tie-in with the ongoing Transformers film series, given the post-credits teaser presented after the credits of the latest Transformers outing, Rise of the Beasts.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura states the next film in the franchise could be another character-focused film like G.I. Joe: Snake Eyes.
Recent interviews seem to confirm this, as producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has stated that studio execs franchise have been quiet for some time regarding the beloved franchise, though new talks have begun forming on the future of the series. Alternatively, Lorenzo di Bonaventura states the next film in the franchise could be another character-focused film like G.I. Joe: Snake Eyes.
In a May 2023 interview, recorded just days before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA unions began their recent strike, di Bonaventura explained that he and other producers of the G.I. Joe movies has plans to develop a television pilot for Amazon which focused on the character Lady Jaye.
Though the project died on the vine, the producer stated plans to pivot to a film version, following the beloved female G.I. who enlisted into the military to spite her father’s sexist comments regarding women who serve. Of course, the strikes have put a confusing spin on just about all active productions this past Summer, meaning any film and television news that hasn’t been reaffirmed in the last week or so is subject to change.
G.I. Joe: Ever Vigilant or potential Lady Jaye movie isn’t likely to exist within the same continuity as the previous 2009, 2013, and 2021 films
Regardless, there is currently no confirmation that the rumored G.I. Joe: Ever Vigilant or potential Lady Jaye movie will exist within the same continuity as the previous 2009, 2013, and 2021 films. Given that the franchise has suffered a lukewarm financial response and a number of debilitating critical reviews, the teaser at the end of the Transformers prequel may well serve as a jumping-off point for a brand new canon of G.I. Joe movies.
Additionally, it may be difficult to get the same leading performers to reprise their roles from previous outings within the franchise, which tout such names as Channing Tatum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Sienna Miller.
There are still many questions regarding a possible G.I. Joe movie, which producers maintain is still in the works. However, given that the combined striking power of the writers’ and actors’ unions have halted production throughout much of this year, it likely wouldn’t be wise for fans to hold their breath for a 2024 release date.
Currently it seems as though fans of the franchise have more questions than answers, the most pressing question being “How exactly does Hasbro plan to make a film based on Play-Doh? For now, all we can do is wait for updates from the studio.
