We were shocked to learn of the passing of Suzanne Somers, a star of many great television shows and films. In the 1970s, she dazzled us on Three’s Company, and she went on to be one of the hardest-working actors in all of Hollywood. Sadly, TMZ reports that the star is now dead at 76 after a longtime battle with cancer.

Unfortunately, Suzanne Somers has been battling cancer for over two decades. Back in 2000, she was first diagnosed with melanoma, and that soon turned into breast cancer. The star was quite the fighter, though, and she successfully fought the spread of this cancer for a very long time.

Suzanne Somers passed away at the age of 76 after a long battle with cancer.

That all changed this past summer when the breast cancer began to return. At this point, Suzanne Somers opened up about her battle in a heartbreaking online update for fans, and she sounded optimistic about her ability to win this latest battle: “every now and then it pops up again, and I continue to bat it down…This is not new territory for me,” she said. “I know how to put on my battle gear and I’m a fighter.”

She continued to give this fight as much time and energy as she could, eventually searching for medical treatment options in the Midwest that might be superior to what was available in her own state. Unfortunately, Suzanne Somers’ treatments were not a success, and she was eventually brought home. Still, both the actor and her family thought she had more time before she would pass away.

That leads to a bit of grim irony regarding Suzanne Somers’ passing: because the star’s birthday is on October 16, many of her family members were already visiting her in order to wish this Hollywood veteran a happy birthday. However, Somers’ was reported dead on October 15, and the same family members who gathered to celebrate her life are now collectively mourning her loss. On the upside, the presence of her family meant that Somers died surrounded by family, including her husband, Bruce and her son, Alan.

In addition to appearing in Three’s Company, she also impressed us in other legendary shows such as Starsky and Hutch as well as She’s the Sheriff, and she memorably appeared in movies such as Serial Mom and American Graffiti

Speaking of Suzanne Somers’ family, the actor’s representative put out a statement on their behalf. The rep said that the family “will celebrate her extraordinary life, and want to thank her millions of fans and followers who loved her dearly.” The representative also clarified that “A private family burial will take place this week, with a memorial to follow next month.”

We share in the family’s sadness that Suzanne Somers has passed away after her long battle with cancer, and we hope the family finds some solace in the idea that Somers lives on thanks to our happy memories of her many amazing acting roles.

In addition to appearing in Three’s Company, she also impressed us in other legendary shows such as Starsky and Hutch as well as She’s the Sheriff, and she memorably appeared in movies such as Serial Mom and American Graffiti (the hit film George Lucas directed before giving us Star Wars).

Next time we watch Somers’ smile light up the screen, we’ll certainly feel sad about her passing. However, we’ll also feel grateful that she gave us so many decades of joy and entertainment. We can only hope her family takes comfort from the joy Somers gave millions of fans and that her painful battle with cancer is finally at an end.
