Stranger Things Season 4 was naturally going to end with some heartbreaking deaths, but the final script nearly contained one that would have upset fans.
For those of you who have not seen Stranger Things Season 4, look away immediately. The rest of this article is going to contain heavy spoilers for the series. Now that we got that out of the way, let’s dive into who tragically met their end as the kids of Hawkins fought the evil Vecna and his bid to take over their small town, and likely the world. The tragic death that took place was that of the fourth season fan-favorite character, Eddie. He became a hero after he saved Dustin and gave everyone more time to stop Vecna. However, the Duffer Brothers revealed another major character that was initially going to die. According to Ross Duffer, “In terms of who makes it, who lives or dies… I think there was a version where Dimitri, aka Enzo, didn’t make it.” Enzo and Eddie dying in Stranger Things would have been a bit too much.
Seeing Enzo die in Stranger Things after doing so much to help Hopper escape prison and Russia would have been quite heartbreaking. He also became a fan-favorite character, though he was initially trying to make money off Hopper in the beginning. However, the pair formed a tight bond, and that bond has seemingly been unbreakable. We know from the third season that Bob was the one to die when it seemed that everyone had been safe. A loose Demogorgon got ahold of him, and that is something that might have happened to Enzo, considering the prison was full of them. Thankfully, that was not the case. Enzo became a hero, much like Eddie, only Eddie did not make it.
So far, Eddie and Dr. Brenner aka Papa were the ones who met their untimely end in the final two episodes of Stranger Thing Season 4, with Enzo making it out practically unscathed. Well, that is not entirely true. There was another lesser-known death. The moment when the ground cracked open and the Hawkins became a hub for the upside-down saw another major character die, though no one seemed to care as much. That character was Jason, who all but stopped Lucas from saving Max. He was split open and burned immediately by the portal of the upside-down opening. That is another unknown is if Max is going to make it as well. She is currently in bad shape in the hospital after Vecna had basically killed her. She was saved by Eleven somehow, but Sadie Sink (Max) recently discussed she has no idea if her character will make it out of the coma. Clearly, the Duffer Brothers aren’t going to reveal all their plans for the fifth and final season.
The good news is that Enzo did make it through Stranger Things Season 4, but we are not sure if he is going to be important past this current season. He did make it out alive and clearly was able to get Hopper back home to Joyce and Eleven, but we didn’t quite get closure for his character. He could have just ridden off into the sunset with Yuri, but we have no clue currently. The Duffer Brothers have loosely announced that they would be writing the final season this year, and even David Harbour (Hopper) has stated that we might be seeing the final season in early 2024. We are likely to see a lot more deaths in the final run for the Hawkins kids.
