After the conclusion of the highly popular Hunger Games trilogy, it seemed that audiences would have to wait some time for its like to show up again. Fans’ obsession with deathly game came about again in the form of a Netflix show. In September of this year, Netflix premiered the South Korean drama, Squid Game.  Maybe even more brutal than the dystopian romance trilogy, Squid Game became one of the most popular Netflix series and gained critical acclaim (via Game Rant). The anti-capitalist series was a scathing indictment on modern society and fans could not get enough of it.

So much so that there has been talk about repurposing the show for a theme park. Star Wars has Galaxy’s Edge. Harry Potter has The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. And if actor Lee Jung-jae has anything to say about it, fans might be in for a park in the stylings of Squid Game. The actor is already highly popular in Korean cinema, but American audiences got to know him for this character Seong Gi-hun, the down on his luck gambler who has no choice but to join the Squid Game in an attempt to pay off his debts (via The New York Times).

Although there is no official word on the status of a theme park, Lee couldn’t help but notice the potential for a theme park while in the midst of filming Squid Game. The actor spoke to People about the instance where this idea occurred to him. During filming of the Red Light, Green Light scene, it clicked for Lee that the show was going to be a phenomenon. And there was more potential in the franchise than anyone could have possibly known at the time. “I went and told [Hwang] and the crew, ‘I think this is going to be really popular. You should make a theme park right now, you should make sure that that robot’s there, and people could play the six games that are in this show,’” Lee recollected.

Lee wasn’t wrong in some respects. The show indeed has found a mass amount of success following its first season. The first season of Squid Game consisted of many characters that had no other choice but to play children’s games in life or death scenarios. Characters like Lee’s Seong Gi-hun had debts because of the difficulties of modern life. Even when the players are given the opportunity to leave the game with their lives, they return because they have no other options. Although Seong wins in the end, he can’t let the idea of the games go. The season ends on a cliffhanger as Seong goes back to confront the game makers.

Because of the dramatic end of Squid Game season 1, fans are seeking even more content in the world of the show. Just recently, Chicago held a real-life Squid Game. The event was a celebration of Korean culture and allowed participants to hold the six games shown in the television show. Luckily, this was not life or death as the show depicted. And fans that desire more content are in luck.

Squid Game season 2 is closer than they may think. The new season will follow the trajectory of Seong’s character. Wounded from his experiences in the game, Seong will seek out those who forced him to kill and confront the makers of the game. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is still negotiating with Netflix but fans are sure to tune in when season 2 of Squid Game airs.
