Though it may seem quaint now, adult content on the internet did not used to be so prevalent in the early days of the internet. And there was no sex tape as famous or coveted as that of Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson. The couple met in 1995 and after only knowing each other for a week, got married (via The Hollywood Reporter). The celebrity couple was famous separate from each other. Lee was the drummer for Motley Crue and Pamela Anderson was known for her role on the popular lifeguard television show, Baywatch. The couple’s tumultuous and dramatic relationship is the subject matter of Hulu’s upcoming limited series, Pam & Tommy. Starring Lily James and Sebastian Stan in the lead roles, the show depicts the highly publicized time surrounding the theft of the married couple’s sex tape and the release of it on the internet.

Hulu released a teaser for Pam & Tommy a couple of months ago, but the newest trailer delves deeper into the love story between the couple. Meatloaf’s classic song “I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)” is a perfect backdrop for the story. The trailer shows Sebastian Stan as Tommy Lee and his first encounter with Pamela Anderson. Both fall in love quickly with Anderson remarking that she liked Lee’s smile. But the relationship is quickly thrown into chaos with the theft of their honeymoon sex tape. Lee feels as though their experiences are the same since they are both on the tape. What he doesn’t understand is the societal pressures put on women and how Pamela Anderson was held to a certain standard at the time.

This type of social commentary should be familiar to Sebastian Stan. He previously worked with director Craig Gillespie in the 2017 film I, Tonya. The film was told from the perspective of figure skater Tonya Harding who became infamous after arranging for Nancy Kerrigan to be attacked at the 1994 Olympics trials. Stan portrayed her turbulent ex-husband Jeff Gillooly who was complicit in the crime. I, Tonya was criticized for its perspective on the case. Harding was posed as a sympathetic character despite the harm she inflicted on another person (via USA Today). I, Tonya was even nominated for several Academy Awards (via The Guardian).

If there is anyone that can bring humanity to a complex character, it is Sebastian Stan. Lee lived a high octane lifestyle while drumming for Motley Crue and has been accused of domestic abuse in the past (via People). Stan has proven his acting chops in the past and is up to the task. Stan’s earlier role in teen drama Gossip Girl was that of Carter Baizen, an entitled rich Upper East Sider who trapped Nate (Chace Crawford) into an illegal gambling ring. But fans should recognize him most from his role as Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Bucky Barnes originally appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger alongside his best friend Steve Rogers. After being captured by Hydra, Bucky was brainwashed and forced to become an assassin. As the Winter Soldier, he was periodically frozen and forced to commit atrocities. Sebastian Stan’s appearance in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier puts a fine point on Bucky’s trauma. He suffers with making amends and the knowledge of what he has done. While fans wait for Stan’s return as Bucky, they can stream Pam & Tommy on Hulu when it airs on February 2nd.
