Watch This Trailer For Star Wars: The Force Awakens, It’s Not What You Think

Star Wars: The Force Awakens as Episode VII of the beloved space opera franchise is now known, is still 400 or so days away, but your first look at a trailer is right here, right now. Okay, not exactly. While this video is in fact a trailer for something called Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it’s not the one you’re probably thinking of. Back in 2006, a fan made his very own film, interestingly enough called Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And this is the trailer for that.

The Force Awakens 2006 is the brainchild of a Canadian fan named Dan Lalonde, who, along with some likeminded friends, took it upon themselves to make their very own Star Wars film, and the result is a 50-minute fan movie that is, well, it’s a fan movie. We can just leave it at that. Watch the trailer they cut together, and you have a pretty good idea of what you’re getting into, though I’m not sure what the deal is with that glowing spot on that one dude’s ass and junk. I guess I’ll have to watch it all to find out.

The story of Lalonde’s film is set on a modern day Earth, or at least the 2006 incarnation of our planet, where the Force, long thought extinct, awakens in the descendants of the Jedi and the Sith. See what he did there? Here’s what Lalonde wrote when he put the trailer up on YouTube yesterday, “It takes place in modern day and is about a Jedi who unleashes the Force and goes mad from it becoming a recluse like Howard Hughes.”

It’s funny, because this has been floating around for years. Lalonde made it available way back when, but Lucasfilm apparently didn’t do much looking into their title (or maybe they’re hoping to ride the tidal wave of hype for Lalonde’s film, we’re not sure). Talking to Yahoo, he said, “My movie is kind of crappy, to be honest, which makes it even more funny. It is pretty awesome, though, to have come up with the title.”

There have been reports that we will see an actual trailer for the actual Star Wars: The Force Awakens before the end of the year. Many speculate that it could appear with Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies when that mammoth beast arrives in theaters in December. We’ve also heard that the preview, whenever it appears, will feature new music from John Williams, which is an exciting prospect to look forward to. But until then, and until December 18, 2015, we’ll have to be content with what we have, which is this version of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

And there’s this poster too.
