Dan Aykroyd Has Big Plans For The Future Of Ghostbusters
One used to be able to say the words Ghostbusters and Dan Aykroyd in the same sentence without bile oozing out with every syllable, but those days are long over. The writer/actor has gone off the deep end quite a few times when verbalizing his ideas for the next (and arguably unnecessary) chapter in the Ghostbusters legacy, and now it’s clear he’s never coming back. He now envisions the paranormal comedy as an entire franchise that could one day be comparable to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’re pretty sure he’s been toking on the Smoke Monster from Lost.
Aykroyd was in London recently promoting his Crystal Head brand of vodka—a brand inspired by his fascination with bullshit legends—and he shared his grand plans for the future of the series. He is reportedly having talks with director Ivan Reitman and Sony executives about not merely one more movie, but another ten years of Ghostbusters-related material. (If it’s anything like the last ten years, it’ll just be more rumors.)
“It’s beyond just another sequel, a prequel, another TV show,” he pointed out. “I’m thinking what does the whole brand mean to Sony? What does Pixar and Star Wars mean to Disney? What does Marvel mean to Fox?” To be fair, that’s just a good starting point for a marketing strategy, so I’m not calling him out for craziness there. Just for this next line.
“The whole mythology from the beginning of their lives, the end of their lives,” he continued, clearly unable to stop this train ride to Informationville. “Ghostbusters at nine years old, Ghostbusters in high school.” Everyone with butterfly nets, there’s your cue to catch this guy before he does harm to himself or someone else.
But he went on, of course. Not with statements like, “We’ve got most of it figured out but we just need that one thing,” but rather with those like the one below, in which he compared the film franchise to the Ectomobile.
It’s up on blocks, it needs new electronics, new everything. That’s what we have to do. The whole vehicle of Ghostbusters has to be rebuilt. That’s the ambitious thinking that’s going on now. Taking on the model of Marvel where we take all of the elements that are in this movie and we put them out there as different ideas.”
