The Sandman Season 2 Needs To Cast A Marvel Actor

As The Sandman Season 2 approaches, fans are speculating about which plotline from the comics the show will adapt next. One of the most popular plotlines fans have suggested is The Sandman: Season of Mists, which features Dream being gifted Hell and negotiating with various beings to decide who will rule the diabolical dimension. If that’s true, it would be the perfect opportunity to have Anthony Hopkins reprise his role from the MCU as Odin.

The Sandman Season 2 Should Adapt Season Of The Mist

Fans expect an adaptation of Season of the Mist because the first season perfectly sets that storyline up. The first season ended with Lucifer Morningstar plotting revenge on Dream, which is Lucifer’s motivation for giving Dream Hell in the comics. It would be a natural fit for The Sandman Season 2 to follow Lucifer gifting Dream with Hell to fulfill that revenge plot.

Anthony Hopkins Could Reprise His Role As Odin

One of the factions vying for Hell in Neil Gaiman’s comic is Asgard, with Odin, Thor, and Loki being Asgard’s emissaries. These characters are based directly on the mythological version of the characters, making them quite different from the Marvel versions audiences have grown to love. However, Hopkins would be perfect as Odin in The Sandman Season 2.

Like all the characters in Season of the Mist, Odin schemes, manipulates, and politically maneuvers to get the key to Hell. It would make sense for such a central character, who interacts with the protagonist so much to be played by a known actor. Hopkins fits the bill, and his casting would get The Sandman Season 2 plenty of hype, even more so given his role in the Thor movies.

Odin Makes More Sense Than Loki Or Thor

Of course, it wouldn’t just be stunt casting; Anthony Hopkins is perfect for the role. Even when he played the more humanized version of Odin in the Thor movies, Hopkins brought a sense of theatrical bravado to the character that made him feel larger than life. The Sandman Season 2 could use someone with that level of gravitas to elevate season two and make a story about gods feel appropriately grandiose.

Anthony Hopkins’ career-defining role as Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs demonstrates he can play the manipulative but regal role Odin would have in The Sandman Season 2. The version of Odin in Season of the Mist is desperate to acquire Hell to avoid Ragnarok for his people, a noble goal he’s willing to do anything to accomplish. It would take an actor on Anthony Hopkins’ level to sell that sympathetic goal while still coming across as equal parts menacing, powerful, and desperate.

Chris Hemsworth And Tom Hiddleston Wouldn’t Fit The Bill

Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston are too connected with their MCU versions of Thor and Loki for audiences to buy them as new versions of those characters. Unlike those actors, Hopkins was a legendary actor for decades before being cast in the MCU, making the audience more likely to accept him in a new version of the same character. Connecting The Sandman Season 2 to pop culture’s most notable version of Asgardian mythology makes sense, but Hopkins is the only actor the trick would work with.

The Perfect Choice For Old And New Fans

Season of the Mist is the perfect story for The Sandman Season 2 and giving Anthony Hopkins another chance to play Odin would be a huge win. It would be great to see the prolific actor interacting with a more aggressive Thor and more underhanded Loki. It would also give fans a sense of familiarity even as they meet a very different comic-book version of the Asgardians.
