Despite their long and successful careers in Hollywood, Robert Downey Jr. and Kate Winslet have never had the opportunity to appear together in a film. One such missed chance for their collaboration was in the 2006 romantic comedy The Holiday, where Downey auditioned for a role but ultimately wasn’t cast. During this audition, Winslet playfully roasted the British accent of the future Sherlock Holmes.

British star Kate Winslet had to tell Robert Downey Jr. the accent he used to audition for The Holiday was horrible.

According to Variety, Robert Downey Jr. and Jimmy Fallon recently discussed their joint audition for The Holiday on The Howard Stern Show. Downey Jr. tried out for the character of Graham, losing to his future Watson, Jude Law, while Fallon aimed for the role of Miles, which ended up going to Jack Black.

Downey recalled how Winslet jokingly criticized his British accent, remarking it as the “worst British accent” she had ever heard.

Jimmy Fallon expressed high praise for Robert Downey Jr., reminiscing about their audition experience and considering him the greatest performer he had ever shared a scene with.

Unfortunately, Kate Winslet evidently held a different viewpoint. Robert Downey Jr. humorously recounted that Winslet’s comments caused him to mentally “check out” of the audition, but he jokingly declared his intent to grab some “gummy bears from the minibar” on his way out.

During the Howard Stern interview, no one talked about Robert Downey Jr.’s British accent in Sherlock Holmes.

Jimmy Fallon revealed that his audition for The Holiday marked the conclusion of his auditions for roles. In contrast, Robert Downey Jr. continued his acting journey and went on to achieve remarkable success.

Most notably, Robert Downey Jr. secured the iconic role of Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Winslet’s critique of his British accent may have been valid, Downey proved his mettle as a superhero, appearing in a total of nine films within the MCU and solidifying his place as a beloved character in the franchise.

Regarding The Holiday, it appears that Robert Downey Jr. may have escaped a potential disappointment, as the film received mixed reviews from critics. With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 51 percent, the Nancy Meyers-directed movie, starring Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jack Black, and Jude Law, failed to garner widespread acclaim.

While it achieved moderate success at the box office, earning $205 million against an $85 million budget, it did not reach the level of a blockbuster MCU feature.

Robert Downey Jr. and Kate Winslet have never starred in a movie together.

Although Robert Downey Jr. and Kate Winslet missed the chance to share the screen in The Holiday, it’s always possible for them to collaborate on a film in the future. Both actors have had long and successful careers, and the entertainment industry often brings unexpected reunions and partnerships.

Given their talent and versatility, it would be exciting to see the two stars join forces in a project showcasing their acting chops.

For now, Robert Downey Jr. and Kate Winslet have a lineup of projects that will keep them occupied. Downey is currently involved in five ventures: Average Height, Average Build, All-Star Weekend, Sherlock Holmes 3, Play Dirty, and the TV miniseries The Sympathizer.

Similarly, Winslet has her hands full with projects like DreamScapes, Lee, Fake, and the television series The Regime.
