The Overlooked Netflix Comedy Just As Crazy As The Hangover

Budapest (2018)

If you’re a fan of The Hangover, then you’re probably a fan of bachelor party movies where things don’t go as planned. That’s exactly what you’ll get with the 2018 French comedy Budapest, which is directed by Xavier Gens. The film is available to stream on Netflix if you want to check out this overlooked comedy.

Budapest follows Vincent (Manu Payet) and Arnaud (Jonathan Cohen), two ordinary guys in Paris who don’t have much going on in their lives. After ending up at a dive bar, a stripper tells the pair how Budapest is one of the best party towns out there. This sparks an idea for the two to open a business where they organize crazy bachelor weekends in the Hungarian city.

The French comedy Budapest is perfect for fans of The Hangover and it’s now on Netflix.

The two then head to Budapest, where they team up with a local and his prostitute wife to scout out the city and create their first weekend for Crazy Tours. Of course, some hijinks ensue, and everything doesn’t go quite as planned. You’ll have to check out the film for yourself to see how everything plays out.

If you’re expecting some high-brow genius comedy, then you’re looking in the wrong place. Budapest is an irreverent, goofball party film like The Hangover. There are many laughs, a lot of debauchery, and a lot of sticky situations that the main pair have to work themselves out of somehow.

Is Budapest a superior film or on equal footing to The Hangover? Your results may vary, but probably not. But that doesn’t mean the film isn’t plenty of fun and worth watching.

Budapest (2018)

Like The Hangover, Budapest takes place in the middle of a bachelor party, though it doesn’t have quite the same hook as The Hangover from a story perspective.

When the lead pair start their business in Budapest, they partner with the wacky character Georgio (Monsieur Poulpe), who is essentially the Zack Galifianakis character of the film. Expect Poulpe to get some of the wackiest scenes and the biggest laughs. Of course, everyone plays their roles well, and the cast is largely likable.

Budapest is also a very breezy film, clocking in at only 102 minutes total, so you could easily take it down during a lazy Sunday afternoon or on a weeknight movie night.

As a French-language film, Budapest flew under the radar for a lot of American audiences, so don’t be too surprised that you missed out on this one. With that being said, you may be wondering if you should go with the original version of the film with subtitles or if you should go the English dub route. The answer honestly depends on your preferences.

Obviously, in most cases, it’s best if you can watch the film in its original language, but not everyone likes having to read subtitles. If this is the case, then the English dubbed version will do in a pinch. However, you might lose some of the performances of the original actors if you decide to go this route.

Budapest is also a very breezy film, clocking in at only 102 minutes total, so you could easily take it down during a lazy Sunday afternoon or on a weeknight movie night. If you’ve been missing the party comedies that were everywhere in the late 2000s, then this might just be the perfect nostalgic throwback that you’re looking for. Of course, if you weren’t a big fan of those films, it’s doubtful that this one is going to do anything to change your mind.

Like The Hangover, Budapest takes place in the middle of a bachelor party, though it doesn’t have quite the same hook as The Hangover from a story perspective.

You can also tell that Budapest has a pretty decent budget, as director Xavier Gens brings the city to life through some big party scenes and cool cinematography. Similar to the film itself, the historic Hungarian city tends to be underrated when it comes to planning trips to Europes, so this film might just inspire you to go check it out for your next vacation. It’s always fun to have a comedy that inspires a little bit of wanderlust on top of providing the laughs.

From The Hangover to Bachelor Party, it seems like there’s always going to be a solid bachelor party-related comedy coming out every now and then, and Budapest was the film we got in 2018. While it doesn’t seem likely that this movie will get two sequels like The Hangover did, it’s still worth the watch. Head over to Netflix to check it out.
