Reptile

The newest Netflix thriller, Reptile, recently premiered on the streamer, and it’s already a hit. The Benecio del Toro-led film has climbed to the #1 spot, and audiences are praising it with solid reviews. You can head over to Netflix to check it out now.

Reptile stars Benicio del Toro as a detective who tries to uncover the truth about the brutal murder of a young real estate agent.

The top movie on Netflix is the intense crime-thriller Reptile.

Along with del Toro, the Netflix film stars Justin Timberlake, Alicia Silverstone, Michael Pitt, Ato Essandoh, Frances Fisher, Eric Bogosian, Domenick Lombardozzi, Karl Glusman, Matilda Lutz, Thad Luckinbill, Sky Ferreira, James Devoti, and Michael Beasley. Grant Singer, who has directed music videos for Sky Ferreira, the Weeknd, Lorde, and Sam Smith, directed the film in his feature-length directorial debut.

Grant Singer co-wrote Reptile with Benjamin Brewer and del Toro from a story Singer co-wrote with Brewer. The film first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival before moving over to Netflix. While critics have based the film a bit, giving it relatively mixed reviews, audiences have been praising it with an aggregate score of 75 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

While critics and audiences are a bit divided about Reptile, there is some crossover between their opinions. Particularly, both parties agree that the plot can get a bit convoluted at times but that the performances, particularly del Toro’s, help to elevate the thriller and make it well worth the watch on Netflix. Silverstone is also praised for her performance, but you’ll just have to check it out for yourself to find out whether you agree with the critics or the audiences about the film overall.

Reptile is the perfect tense and taut thriller for spooky season, with the film evoking David Fincher-esque vibes.

October promises to be a pretty promising one for Netflix’s original shows and movies, as Reptile is far from the only original that will likely make waves this month. On October 12, Netflix will be releasing the next highly anticipated series from Mike Flanagan, The Fall of the House of Usher, which is based on the works of Edgar Allen Poe and follows two siblings battling over the empire of their father.

Another blockbuster hit for the streamer should be the film Pain Hustlers, which drops October 27 and stars Emily Blunt and Chris Evans about a woman’s rise to power in a pharmaceutical company.

Reptile is the perfect tense and taut thriller for spooky season, with the film evoking David Fincher-esque vibes. Netflix also recently released the critically acclaimed animated series Castlevania: Nocturne, which has plenty of vampires and beasts that make it perfect for the Halloween season. If you’re looking for new shows that evoke Halloween vibes, it seems like the streamer has you covered for the entire month.

What’s Next For Benicio Del Toro

Benicio del Toro in Reptile

Benecio del Toro’s only project for the year is Reptile, and the Netflix film is the first time we’ve seen the actor in a project since 2021’s Wes Anderson film The French Dispatch and his voice role in 2021’s What If…? as the Collector.

Unfortunately, there’s no official word for when we can expect to see del Toro in another film or series, as both of his upcoming projects have yet to announce an official release date, and they both seem like they don’t have a solid release date in sight. One of the films, All-Star Weekend, might actually never get released.

All-Star Weekend is an unreleased comedy directed by Jamie Foxx that apparently has no plans for a release, with Foxx citing the “lay of the land when it comes to comedy.” Reportedly, Robert Downey Jr goes back to the Tropic Thunder well, this time playing a Mexcian man in the film, while Foxx also plays a racist white cop at one point. With that film seemingly shelved indefinitely, Reptile may be the only del Toro project we get for a little while.

Benicio del Toro also has the Oliver Stone film White Lies on his upcoming project slate, but that film was announced back in 2018 and has yet to announce a release date. At least for now, it doesn’t seem like there are any projects from del Toro that have been officially announced with solid release dates. While we wait to learn about del Toro’s next big projects, fans can at least go watch Reptile on Netflix to see his latest performance.
