Matt Damon, for sure, has the acting skills to pull off an action role. We know as much from his work in the Jason Bourne roles in which he’s punched, kicked, and shot his way out of almost every situation. So when we dial up the fireworks, it’s pretty clear Damon can hold his own in this respect. And the guy has already had a brief cameo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so there’s at least a little comic book history there. Apparently, he’s heading back to the franchise with insider Daniel Richtman reporting that Damon is joining the cast of Thor: Love and Thunder.

As of right now, there’s no confirmation on what role Matt Damon will have in the movie with no specific casting news released. But Richtman appears to think the information is good and the superstar actor will be joining the much-anticipated fourth movie in the franchise.

It will be a return to the Thor movies for Matt Damon who did appear briefly in Thor: Ragnarok. In it he plays an actor on Asgard, playing a version of Loki as they entertain a crowd with the story of Loki’s time in The Avengers. It’s a very funny scene, setting something of the tone for the rest of the movie which trended more comedic than almost anything we’d seen in the franchise. We know he was a resident of Asgard as an actor but in terms of how that translates to the new movie, it’s tough to say. Here’s his scene from that film:

Thor: Love and Thunder will be the fourth film in the Thor franchise, following the success of Ragnarok and the events of Avengers: End Game. Thor’s character took a decidedly positive turn over those two movies, getting a little fat and taking more of a devil-may-care attitude that played really well on screen. Adding Matt Damon to the cast, even in a limited role, would make one think they are continuing to lean into that angle especially if he returns as the same actor he played in the previous film.

Matt Damon would join an already all-star cast for Love and Thunder which includes Tessa Thompson reprising her Valkyrie role and Natalie Portman coming back as Jane Foster in some fashion. Other notables who’ve been confirmed are Chris Pratt as Peter Quill / Star-Lord and Jaimie Alexander returning as Lady Sif who we saw in Thor and Dark World. And finally, Christian Bale has a confirmed role in the movie, though his part isn’t known at this point.

Taiki Waititi is back in the director’s chair for Thor: Love and Thunder after helming Ragnarok. The latter was a massive hit, scoring more than $850 million at the box office and crushing with critics, hitting 93% on the Tomatometer. If he’s trying to maintain some consistency with the cast, as well as adding a continued comedic angle, then it likely wasn’t all that tough to get Matt Damon on board.

But we’ll have to wait until we see Matt Damon once again take the screen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thor: Love and Thunder isn’t due to hit screens until some time in 2022.
