Margot Robbie is taking over franchises left and right. She’s about to return in the DC Extended Universe this summer, having staked a spot in that world with her exceptional work as an antihero. There’s also word that she’s going to be joining the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot as well. And the latest rumors around that movies have it that she’ll be taking the main character in a different direction than we’ve seen. Insider Daniel Richtman has it that, “Margot’s character in Pirates will be queer”. He doesn’t expand anymore on this news, but it’s clear they are making a completely updated story in this universe.

The rumor that Margot Robbie will be having her character be queer in the next Pirates of the Caribbean follows the recent rumors that this next movie will feature an almost all-female cast. This is still very much in development with the studio having not landed, yet, on a firm path for the movie. That’s what it would seem at least with few official pieces of news coming out other than Robbie being attached to play a part.

But if this is the case with the direction of the film in terms of the all-female cast and if Richtmas’s rumor holds true then Margot Robbie would be finding a love interest in the production. It’s setting up to be a very different film than the original Pirates of the Caribbean films which did use a love story angle to start, though it didn’t center around the lead character in Captain Jack Sparrow, but rather two others as part of the plot.

Again, this new Pirates of the Caribbean still appears in the relative infancy of its production timeline. Though Margot Robbie is on board, it doesn’t appear many other decisions have been made either in front of the camera or behind it. They are going to take the franchise in a new direction though, working furiously to distance themselves from the previous Johnny Depp-led films. It’s already been reported that Depp won’t even be making a cameo in these new films after the high-profile court case he was involved with over the summer. His time in the franchise, for the time being, is over.

As for Margot Robbie, the future is bright for the talented actress. Before she gets anything underway with a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie there are plenty of chances to catch her on the big screen over the next couple of years. Of course, she’ll be reprising her Harley Quinn role in this summer’s The Suicide Squad which looks like will take full advantage of the manic craziness she brings to the role. There’s the word of a Harley/ Joker film with Jared Leto as well.

Margot Robbie is also set to star in a now-untitled David O. Russell feature as well. That will have Robbie co-starring with Anya Taylor-Joy, John David Washington, Christian Bale, and others. And don’t forget Damien Chazelle’s Babylon with Brad Pitt. Robbie is about as sought-after a talent as there is in the industry right now. And she’s going to make her mark on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise in the next couple of years.
