Relationships are hard to hold together. No matter who you are, romantic attachments take a lot of effort to keep both parties happy and healthy, and sometimes, they just don’t work out. Just a few days ago, Mad Men co-stars, Alexis Bledel and Vincent Kartheiser announced that they would be calling it quits and separating after eight years of marriage. The initial push came from Kartheiser who filed for divorce just a week ago on August 10.

The couple’s relationship first began as they worked side-by-side on AMC’s hit period drama, Mad Men. A series regular, Kartheiser starred as Pete Campbell, with Bledel joining the cast in a recurring role. Her part of Beth Dawes would see her appear in three episodes during the show’s fifth season. It was there on the set of the Jon Hamm led production that a romance would begin to blossom between the two.

Like many couples in the entertainment biz, the duo hoped to keep details surrounding their relationship under wraps. Back in 2014, which would be the year two would say their vows, Kartheiser spoke to Vulture about how much he wanted to keep the relationship to themselves. During his interview, the Mad Men star referred to his relationship with Bledel as well as others close to him as the “most important things” that he has. Continuing on, the actor said that should others become involved, tossing their opinions and feelings into the ring, that it could have possibly torn down the “profoundly spiritual” love felt between them.

Following their marriage in 2014, the Mad Men couple brought a son into the world during the fall of 2015, further adding to their happy little family. As of right now, neither party has cited specific reasons for the dissolution of their marriage.

While she’s widely recognized for her recurring role on Mad Men, many will recognize Bledel even more so as one-half of the faces of the sarcastic and witty early 2000’s series, Gilmore Girls. There, she starred opposite Lauren Graham as the actress’ on-screen daughter, Rory Gilmore. Her time on the seven season series would launch her to fame, landing her on future projects including film roles in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, as well as its sequel. Recently, she nabbed an Emmy Award for her work in Hulu’s apocalyptic drama, The Handmaid’s Tale

Those of us who were drawn into and addicted to the universe of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, will recognize Kartheiser from its spinoff series, Angel. His time on the series saw him portraying David Boreanaz’s titular character’s son. Moody and downright annoying, Kartheiser’s Connor was a character we all loved to hate. His role on the series would lead him to find more drama based projects including Mad Men. Most recently, the actor appeared as the Scarecrow on HBO Max’s DC Universe based series, Titans

No matter what the case for the Mad Men alum, breakups are never easy. They are always painful, messy, and devastating and adding a child into the mix makes it all the more heart wrenching. At this time, we’re wishing both Alexis Bledel and Vincent Kartheiser peace and healing.
